According to reports, Sean’s new LP managed to sell over 173,000 copies in its opening week.

With that opening sum, it gives Big Sean his best sales week ever as well, trumping the 87,000 start of his first album, Finally Famous, in 2011. His second studio set, 2013’s Hall of Fame, bowed with 72,000. Both sets debuted and peaked at No. 3. (HITS Daily Double)

According to weekend estimates, the new LP was expected to sell up to 165,000 copies.

Big Sean blows away expectations with sales nearly double the first week of his previous release, 2013’s Hall of Fame, which opened with 72k. Here’s how it looks headed into the weekend:

*Big Sean (Def Jam) 155-165k (125-135k sales)
*Kid Rock (Warner Bros.) 125-135k (120-130k sales)
Drake (YMCMB/Republic) 90-100k (55-60k sales)
Fifty Shades of Grey (Republic) 90-100k (65-70k sales)
Chris Brown & Tyga (RCA) 70-75k (55-60k sales) (HITS Daily Double)

Within a recent FADER magazine interview, Sean downplayed the idea of basing his LP’s success on sales.

Do you think you can beat the Drake tape in sales? I don’t know about that. The most important thing about this album is that I’m proud of how it sounds. As a person, I’ve been growing up more and becoming better all around. I see the progression in myself—not just as an artist. I hope other people can see that, too. I feel like this is the album where, even people who may not be Big Sean fans, the tide might turn for them. (The FADER)

  1. Never liked sean and rappers like him. Don’t know if it’s their whiny voices or feminine mannerisms. But even if that wasn’t the case it’s like everyone closed their eyes to this clown being a pedophile. Don’t just jump on tyga.
