Before Defending NBA Title, LeBron James Joins Starz-Studded Team

NBA champion LeBron James has big plans before lacing his kicks up to defend the Miami Heat’s trophy and has teamed up with movie network Starz for an upcoming television show.

According to reports, King James will have a behind-the-scenes role as an executive producer of a show called “Survivor’s Remorse.”

While he won’t star in the half-hour sitcom, the Miami Heat superstar will be one of the executive producers of the show, which will explore the lives of two men from the streets who attain fame — one is an NBA star and one is not — and how they deal with friends and families in the wake of that success. “I think the main thing for me is, first of all, making it out of a place where you’re not supposed to. You’re supposed to be a statistic and end up like the rest of the people in the inner city — [and] being one of the few to make it out and everyone looking at you to be the savior,” James said in a phone interview last week. The NBA champ has partnered with notable executives like the former producer behind “The Cosby Show.”

James, 28, is developing the show with his longtime friend and business partner, Maverick Carter; Tom Werner, the producer behind classic shows like “Roseanne” and “The Cosby Show”; and actor Mike O’Malley, who will be an executive producer and is the show’s writer. Paul Wachter will also be an executive producer. “It’s definitely not an autobiographical series about my life or LeBron’s life; it’s fictional characters living in a fictional world,” said Carter, before adding with a laugh: “LeBron is actually too famous, he would screw the show up if I tried to make a show about him.” (ESPN)

The show’s main characters will have a backstory which connects to East Coast city Philadelphia.

LeBron James is joining forces with Starz and the man behind classic shows like The Cosby Show to create a sitcom that will touch on something he knows a lot about – Survivor’s Remorse. The Miami Heat star will be the executive producer of the half-hour show. It will focus on two people who make it big after getting out of Philadelphia’s inner city and will chronicle the characters as they try to adjust to that fame along with feelings of guilt for having made it while peers are still struggling. Sports bloggers have applauded King James’ latest power move and acknowledge it is the next step for him as a growing franchise.

I like this career step for James. He’s to the point now where he needs to start expanding his brand, and telling a story similar to his via television is a great way to do it. His level of success is almost unthinkable when you consider the circumstances of his childhood. People always say that real-life stories make for the best television and in this case, I fully agree. The show is yet to start shooting and a release date hasn’t been established. But you can bet that once it debuts, that it will grab the attention of basketball fans from across the globe.
