Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel has confessed to not filing taxes in the mid-2000's on up to $1 million of unreported income.
Details of Sigel’s latest financial situation landed online Tuesday (August 9).
Sigel entered his plea Tuesday in federal court in Philadelphia.U.S. prosecutors say he owes about $350,000 on $1 million of unreported income. But defense lawyer Fortunato Perri Jr. plans to challenge those calculations. (The Republic)
The former Roc-A-Fella rapper could spend up to three years in jail.
Sigel faces up to three years in prison at his Nov. 18 sentencing. The rapper, born Dwight Grant, has served time on drug and weapons charges, and for prescription drug use while on federal probation. But he has also led anti-violence rallies in hometown Philadelphia, and spoken to high school students about life choices. (ABC Local)
Last October, Sigel’s financial woes hit the Internet in the form of tax debts.
Rapper Beanie Sigel (SEE’-gul) is facing criminal charges for alleged tax fraud. Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia say the entertainer born Dwight Grant made $1.5 million from 2002 to 2004, but filed no tax returns. The tax charges come in a federal information filed Wednesday. That typically indicates a defendant’s cooperation. Sigel’s lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment. (Associated Press)
He previously spent time in jail on a probation violation and attempted murder charge.
Sigel served 10 months in prison in 2005 for illegal gun possession, and in 2008 was sentenced to serve one day in jail and six months in a halfway house for violating his probation on that charge. He also previously beat an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting in West Philadelphia. Born Dwight Grant, the Philadelphia native still lives in the city. (Philly Inquirer)
