State Property's Beanie Sigel recently discussed his current legal woes and why his life story strikes comparisons to late American gangster Al Capone who ultimately had taxes bring him down.
Although he acknowledged his own mistakes, Beans attempted to question the United States’ tax laws.
“I was Al Capone,” the Broad Street Bully said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “You can’t get me on this, you gonna get me on that, can’t get me on that, so you know the Al Capone story — taxes.” Capone was linked to a Chicago-based crime syndicate in the 1920s. He was said to be involved in bootlegging, prostitution and murder, but it was tax evasion that the storied gangster was ultimately convicted of. Sig went on to attempt to illustrate his point. “If I fix your roof and you wanna pay me in 20 pounds of bananas, do you think Uncle Sam wants 45 percent of my bananas,” he tried to reason. “But because you paying me $400,000 in currency he wants a part of that, but my mom don’t got no brother named Sam, so I don’t have no Uncle Sam.” (MTV)
Last week, the Philadelphia rapper addressed his upcoming September 12th jail bid.
“In that environment, this outside world…you gotta hang all that up. When I go in there, I won’t be Beanie Sigel. I’ll be 57613-066. That’s who I’ll be. I won’t be Beanie Sigel. I’m not gonna sit in my cell and write rhymes everyday. That’s a real thing inside. There’s people inside who ain’t ever coming out of those buildings. I would talk to them and do my best to be a window for some of ’em who are never gonna make it outta there. We all have the same commissary, we all have the same amount of money on our books, we all gonna eat the same food and nobody cell gonna look different. I’m gonna be a number like everybody else.” (XXL Mag)
Earlier this month, Sigel talked to SOHH about preparing for jail.
“I’m taking it one day at a time, another day above ground, you know,” Sigel told SOHH when asked how he is handling the forthcoming jail bid. “I’m good. [I’m trying to do] everything. I’m an artist. So I’m doing both [working and spending family time.] I’m doing everything I can do to push this [new This Time] album and spend as much time as I can with my family at the same time.” (SOHH)
Sigel received his two-year jail sentence at a mid-July court hearing.
A hip-hop hero to many in the region, Beanie Sigel (Dwight Grant) is headed to prison. The South Philly-born Lansdale resident this afternoon was sentenced to 24-months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Jan E. Dubois for failing to file federal income tax returns, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Philly has announced. The “All the Above” singer must report to prison on Sept. 12. Reportedly Sigel avoided a stiffer sentence by pleading guilty to the charge. Sigel also must pay all taxes, penalties and interests he still owes to the IRS. Prosecutors say Sigel owes the IRS $728,536 for tax years 1999 through 2005. (Philly)
