Mariah Carey Plays Second Fiddle, Lyfe Jennings Joins The Top 5, Lil' Mama Needs To Speak Up

In this week's Hip-Hop and R&B charts, Mariah Carey is dethroned by the "Material Mom," Madonna, Lyfe Jennings debuts in the Top 5 and Lil Mama's voice is barely heard.

Pop superstar, Madonna's eleventh studio album, Hard Candy, tops the charts this week with 280,000 copies sold, according to the Nielsen SoundScan. This is the material mom's seventh chart-topper, placing her second amongst all-time female artist to peak that high, only behind Barbara Streisand. Powered by the Justin Timberlake assisted smash hit "4 Minutes," the single marked the icon's 37th Top 10 hit, the most of any artist in the rock era.

R&B icon and newlywed, Mariah Carey bows out of the top spot, coming in at No. 2 this week. Despite experiencing a 48% decrease in sales, Carey's sixth studio, E=MC2, album sold an impressive 95,400 copies. After three weeks, Mrs. Nick Cannon's set is approaching platinum status scanning an outstanding 741,500 copies.

After becoming the first British female solo artist to debut on top of Billboard 200 with her album Spirit, UK import Leona Lewis falls to No. 3 this week. The sultry songstress is experiencing a 12% decline in sales. However, her debut in just four weeks is approaching Gold status has scanning an impressive 480, 000 copies.

Lyfe Jennings third studio album, Lyfe Change enters the charts at No. 4 selling 80,000 copies. This is Lyfe's second straight album to debut in the Top 5. 2006's The Phoenix, debuted at No. 2 and moved 136,000 albums in its first week.

Legendary hip-hop band, The Roots' ninth studio album, Rising Down, rose up into the Top 10 at No. 6 with 54,000 copies sold. Led by lead single "Rising Up" featuring labelmate Chrisette Michele and Wale, the Def Jam set is the second highest debut for the band as their 2006's Game Theory entered at No. 9.

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks tumbles three spots to No. 23. The self-titled gold debut scanned 19,600 copies this week. After 24 weeks, the songstress has sold 716,500 albums.

The Voice of The Young People, Lil Mama's debut album enters the charts this week at No. 25. The Harlem-bred MC, who heated up the streets with her commercially successful singles "Lip Gloss" and the Chris Brown assisted "Shawty Get Loose," sold an unexpectedly low 18,600 copies.

Mr. M.I.YA-YO, Rick Ross slips-n-slides nine spots to No. 26. Pushing 18,300 copies of Trilla this week, the "Boss" was hit with a 19% decline in sales. However, his sophomore set is speeding toward gold status at 484,000.

The Grammy Award winning Alicia Keys has dropped eight spots to No. 32. The piano woman moved 16,600 copies of As I Am this week for a total of 3,432,40 copies in 25 weeks.

The British invasion continues as newcomer Estelle debuts at No. 38 with her sophomore album Shine. Backed by the Kanye West featured lead single "American Boy," John Legend's Home School Records protégé sold a disappointing 14,900 copies.

Rehab singer, Amy Winehouse slides nine spots from to No. 40 this week. Pushing 14,300 copies of her Grammy Award winning album, Back to Black, the embattled star has experienced a 1% increase in sales. After 60 weeks, the set is a few copies shy of earning the embattled singer a double-platinum plaque, as the album stands at 1,922,000 copies scanned.

After debuting last week with his highest chart position ever, independent hip-hop act, Atmosphere plummets 35 slots to No. 41. The rapper's fifth studio album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That sh*t Gold, took a 61% hit in sales, moving a little over, 14,000 copies. In two weeks, the Rhymesayers artist has scanned 50,500 copies.

"Making the Band" starlets Danity Kane continue to fall in standing as their sophomore set Welcome to the Dollhouse plunges 17 spots from No. 25 to No. 42. With a 14% drop in sales, the songbirds moved only 13,900 albums this week. However, Diddy's girls are approaching Gold status with 452,300 copies sold.

"The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul," Mary J. Blige drops down nine positions; from No. 37 to No. 46, selling 13,000 copies of Growing Pains, this week. After 20 weeks, Blige's eighth disc sales are up by 3% for a grand total of 1,447,500 albums sold.

Flo Rida's debut Mail on Sunday sinks 22 spots to No. 49. After making history with selling over 3 million digital downloads of his infectious single "Low," the Download King's sales have declined by 18% moving 12,800 copies this week. After seven weeks, the set has scanned only 214,000 copies.

Next week look for Madonna and Mariah to fight for the number one spot on the Hip-Hop and R&B Charts.
