Rather than focus on Samsung’s technology, Jigga used the advertisement to announce his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Rap fans rejoice: Jay-Z will release a new album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” on July 4. Jay-Z announced the news through a Samsung commerical which played during tonight’s (June 16) NBA Finals Game 5 (Miami Heat vs. San Antonio Spurs). In the three-minute ad, Jay-Z is seen recording and brainstorming in the studio with Rick Rubin, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. “The album is about, like this duality of how do you navigate through this whole thing, through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself,” he tells Rubin of his twelfth studio album. Samsung has reportedly purchased one million copies of the album, making the project an automatic platinum seller.

The connection: Samsung has purchased 1 million copies of Jay-Z’s coming album, entitled “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” slated for release July 4, and plans to give them to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users for free – 72 hours ahead of the release. The users are to receive the music through an app they’ll receive later this month. (Recipients won’t be able to share it until the official release date.) Samsung paid $5 apiece for the albums, according to a person familiar with the matter. It wasn’t immediately clear if Nielsen SoundScan will count Samsung’s purchases in its sales tallies. Young Hov hinted at something big going down Sunday night a couple days ago.

Within the last week, a rumor popped up suggesting that Samsung and Jay-z were on the verge of a partnership that would include a number of future collaborations. Sure enough, the image above dropped into a our inbox this afternoon through the fine folks at Samsung Mobile, confirming that some sort of partnership is indeed about to become public knowledge. Samsung is asking us all to turn up the volume and tune into game 5 of the NBA Finals on Sunday to witness, something. What yet, we don’t know. For those not familiar with the happenings of that picture, we’re looking at a Samsung device next to a Jesus piece chain and the logo chain for Jay-Z’s Roc-a-Fella records label. (Droid-Life)

Speculation on Jay and Samsung teaming up for a music service bubbled online last week.

Any service the two parties create would likely serve in part as a vehicle for promoting acts signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, not to mention his own music. Samsung already has a subscription-based streaming service, Music Hub, and may be looking to retool or expand it, or launch something completely new and different with Jay-Z. (Forbes)
