Paltrow and Martin released a joint statement Tuesday (March 25) to break the news.

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” read a joint statement on Paltrow’s insufferably pretentious lifestyle blog. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.” The post was signed “Love, Gwyneth & Chris.” (NY Daily News)

Days prior to the announcement, reports claim there were some early signs something was not right between them.

According to an eyewitness who spotted the duo at Sony Studios on Saturday, something appeared “amiss.” Martin, 37, and his band Coldplay performed songs from their new album “Ghost Stories” for a small crowd in order to film extras for the DVD, which was followed by a very intimate after party comprised mostly of friends and family. Not only did the couple not appear to be interacting, but we’re told Paltrow, 41, seemed particularly stressed, somewhat aged, and less vibrant than her typical spritely, macrobiotic self. A few years ago, Paltrow dished on wanting to collaborate with Jay in light of his close-knit relationship to Martin.

Gwyneth Paltrow already has her wish list collaborations for her music career, and a certain Brooklyn rapper tops that list. At the Oscars’ Red Carpet this evening (February 27th), the actress was asked who she dreams of working with in music. Her response? Jay-Z. “I think it would be a good combination,” Paltrow stated. “He is a genius.” Paltrow’s husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, has collaborated with Jay-Z on songs, “Beach Chair” from Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come, as well as the unreleased song “Most Kingz” produced by Green Lantern. The two have performed together countless times and are rumored to be very close friends, with Paltrow as a buddy to Jay-Z as well. (RapFix)

For New Years Eve 2010, Jay was joined by Chris for a Las Vegas show.

The mega mogul Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, has signed up to perform at the the lavish launch party for the new Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas kicking off on December 31. And according to reports, he is being paid a staggering $1 million for the occasion. Another superstar couple who will be at the event, which marks the official opening of the $4 billion resort, is Gwyneth Paltrow and her rocker husband Chris Martin. Chris’ band Coldplay are also on the line up at the no-expense spared extravaganza and are set to take home an equally impressing pay check. (Daily Mail)
