New York rapper Action Bronson is going to leave Canadian fans hanging next month after having his North by Northeast festival performance officially cancelled this week.

According to reports, the annual concert series has pulled the plug on his Yonge-Dundas Square set.

The decision comes after some 37,000 people signed an online petition to have the artist removed from the NXNE lineup over lyrics that petition organizers said glorify “violence against women.” “A significant number of Torontonians have indicated their desire to have Action Bronson not perform at the Square. As annual guests in this space we feel we must accede to the strong wishes of the community and honour their input,” NXNE said in written statement released Friday. (CP24)

Bronson posted up some now-deleted Twitter remarks about the ban Wednesday (May 27).

According to reports, an online petition to have Bronson nixed from the free festival at Yonge-Dundas Square in Ontario had almost instantly received 2,000 signatures once it went live.

The petition — posted at change.org and directed at the City of Toronto, Mayor John Tory (open John Tory’s policard), NXNE organizers, the NXNE-affiliated Now magazine and festival sponsor Vans Footwear — argues that the music of Action Bronson “glorifies gang-raping and murdering women” and therefore should not be permitted an airing in a city-owned space. The petition was based on Bronson’s past lyrics about rape and murder.

“We are petitioning to have this artist removed from the lineup of this show, on the grounds that he produces hate speech,” the petition’s creators write. “A musician who glorifies rape and violence against women should never be allowed to perform at a public space in our city.” (Change)
