Rap newcomer A$AP Rocky recently offered up some dicey words to hip-hop artists who have cashed in with their own clothing lines, calling the popular trend nothing more than "corny."
In Rocky’s perspective, there is no real authenticity behind rappers who try to steer their own fashion lines.
“I might collab with designers, but that sh*t corny. When rappers be doing that clothing line sh*t, that sh*t be corny man. That’s a slow reality show. Ya know how reality shows wash n*ggas up? I feel that clothing line shit is just a slower reality show. That shit corny man…I’m not no fashion designer. Just ’cause I got good taste don’t mean that I know how to create it. I feel that’s disrespectful. It’s just like record labels and sh*t. Just cause motherf*ckers know hip-hop doesn’t mean you know how to create it.” (HHW)
Despite rap star Lil Wayne launching his Trukfit clothing line earlier this year, Rocky recently bigged up Weezy F. Baby’s fashion taste.
“People can say what they want about him with the way he dresses. I hate the way he dresses. I’m keeping it 100 with you. It’s very tacky at times. But that’s what he chooses to do. Get off his d*ck! If that’s what he chooses to wear, OK. At least he’s not wearing it ’cause he saw some other lame motherf*ckers wearing it. That’s when I don’t respect it. He’s doing him! Maybe it doesn’t work for you, but it works for him. So we need to get off his d*ck and let that man be legendary.” (Complex)
Last fall, Young Money’s Nicki Minaj announced plans to drop her own clothing line this year.
“That’s the big thing I’m looking forward to next year, the clothing line,” Nicki said in an interview. “The clothing line’s going to be so, so, so freaking cute. You guys are going to love it. But uh, I don’t know. I’m not really a lingerie type of girl. I’m like a t-shirt and panties type of girl. Lingerie’s stupid! [laughs]” (Tim Westwood TV)
Over the summer, Weezy F. Baby named who he felt are the most stylish hip-hop artists out.
He has got his own skateboard clothing line, but when it comes to fashion Lil Wayne reckons Kanye West is far more stylish. “I do not consider myself the most stylish rapper out there,” he said. “I’d say if I had to consider someone the most stylish rapper out there, I would definitely say that would be a Kanye West or an Andre 3000.” The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, reckons his personal style has evolved throughout his career. “I was one of the guys that would ‘geek chic’ it every now and then… Now I’m just more into whatever works for me. I think that’s just age.” (ITN)
