Em entered the mainstream spotlight in his mid-20’s.
Happy 40th birthday, Eminem. The Detroit rapper who helped define contemporary youth culture has notched the big one today, officially moving into the Elder Statesmen wing of the hip-hop palace. By the way, if the public-relations machinery had gotten its way, Eminem would still be 38. In an age-old showbiz move, his handlers shaved years off his age when he was introduced nationwide in 1999, declaring him to be 24. The record was corrected when the Free Press tracked down his Missouri birth certificate that spring: Born on Oct. 17, 1972, he was, in fact, 26. (Detroit Free Press)
