50 Cent Reveals Beats Clash W/ Interscope, SMS Audio Ban

G-Unit Records head 50 Cent recently talked about his days at Interscope Records and how company CEO Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre‘s involvement with Beats By Dre created conflicts.

According to Curtis Jackson, Interscope hit him with various restrictions after the launch of his SMS Audio headphones line a few years ago.

“Interscope is Beats Records,” 50 Cent told FORBES. “There’s no artist that has a marketing budget supporting what they’re actually doing that doesn’t have Beats headphones in the actual visual to support that brand, that company. So when I invested in SMS Audio, it kind of made people afraid.” In particular, 50 Cent recalls not being allowed to display his own SMS headphones shooting the video for “My Life.” At one point, he wore a hat with the SMS logo on it; the letters were blurred out in the final edit. Earlier this year, 50 said SMS Audio could compete with serious contenders like Dr. Dre’s Beats By Dre due to its international appeal.

“I’ve launched SMS in 59 countries. We pretty much turned it into Adidas. Nike is strong in America, but internationally, Adidas has soccer. Huge. It’s a lot of different things and territories. I don’t know if it has a connection with my touring at those territories. If you’ve had huge success out there in the hip-hop culture over the past decade, you have the ability to tour in areas that weren’t open markets before.” (Complex)

Recently, Fif issued a statement to confirm NBA star Carmelo Anthony had joined his team.

“Carmelo Anthony is one of today’s premier athletes and is known globally for both his sportsmanship and his philanthropic endeavors,” said 50 Cent, CEO of SMS Audio. “He perfectly embodies the values behind SMS Audio and we’re excited to have him representing our brand – Providing Superior Sound Quality through Innovative Audio Products.” (Business Wire)

Last winter, 50 spoke on music producer Timbaland owning a portion of his growing company.

“That’s exciting, that’s really exciting that Tim, you know, wanted to come and get involved with SMS. Because now, he has ownership in the company. Equity ownership and he’s involved in it and it gives him the same incentive that I have with moving forward and being successful. We’re doing big things. We’ve got the CES [Consumer Electronics Show] convention coming up. We’re doing good, man.” (Whoolywood Shuffle)
