Rap Genius Busted Using Shady Tactics, Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz Launch Twerk Season, Eminem’s Nasty X-Mas Treat?
Welcome Wednesday. It’s a day of welcoming greatness from Christmas, so why not get things started with popular lyric-decoding website RapGenius dishing out an apology? Speaking of the unexpected, did anyone see Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz celebrating the year of the twerk? With duos still in your head, is Eminem getting it on with reindeer on X-Mas? All this coming up in SOHH Whatcha Think.

1. Even Geniuses Mess Up
As much as you want to call yourself perfect or think of any entity as flawless, there’s always that bit of doubt and it turns out Rap Genius tried to come up with a genius plan that may have gotten them into some trouble. Complex has the scoop:
Rap Genius has apologized for using questionable SEO tactics to ramp up its Google search results. In an open letter published on its blog, the lyric annotation website acknowledged that its search traffic success is in part due to a strategy that is not fully compliant with Google’s terms.
“tl;dr: We effed up, other lyrics sites are almost definitely doing worse stuff, and we’ll stop. We’d love for Google to take a closer look at the whole lyrics search landscape and see whether it can make changes that would improve lyric search results,” Rap Genius’ founders wrote.
The open letter went up after a blog post outing the site’s spammy tactics was published by tech entrepreneur John Marbach. The post includes an email from Rap Genius co-founder Mahbod Moghadam that blew the lid off the site’s reliance on SEO manipulation, or “growth hacking.” Moghadam apparently told Marbach to embed a prospective Rap Genius post with links to Justin Bieber’s latest album, a move that would be sure to rake in “MASSIVE traffic.”
According to Marbach, “Their business depends on their search engine ranking position (SERP’s) on Google. Hyperlinks connect the web and determine SERP’s. Thus, the most powerful weapon RapGenius can deploy is a series of powerful hyperlinks. You can see in Mahbod’s email that he is asking for hyperlinks from high-page rank sites (personal blogs) with anchor text that mentions tracks from Bieber’s most recent album.”
It’s apparently such an issue that Matt Cutts, Google’s head of search spam, said his team was “aware” of Rap Genius’ shady tactics and is “looking into it.” (Complex)
For the average user, most of us, does this really matter? It seems like they were really looking to get more attention and visitors, but as far as the overall experience, did Rap Genius do anything to limit our enjoyment of the site? And with Justin Bieber now retiring, is there really any further discussion? #SOHHWhatchaThink?
2. X-Mas Twerk
Just when we thought Miley Cyrus had put an end to the twerk movement, Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz announce it is officially “Twerk Season” all over the world. We’ve always known they’re best buds but now they’re putting out music everyone can appreciate it. Rap-Up has the info:
Tis the season for twerking. 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne turn up for the holidays on “Twerk Season,” which the Atlanta rapper previewed last night at the 4th Annual Street Execs Christmas Concert in ATL.
“Twerk, twerk, bitch, twerk!” commands 2 Chainz on the rattling production.
The rappers are rumored to be working on a joint album for release next year.
In related news, 2 Chainz was charged with obstruction following his police standoff in Oklahoma in August. “So the fact that OKC is charging me with obstruction months after pulling my bus over And finding nothing lets me know the devil is busy,” he tweeted.

If there’s anyone that can get people twerking, it’s 2 Chainz with his beat selections and then you add a touch of Weezy? Twerking Gone Wild? #SOHHWhatchaThink?
3. Shady Mas
Is Eminem losing it or just celebrating Christmas the only way that he knows how to? Maybe both? It looks like Slim Shady has X-Mas fully covered. RumorFix is up on it:
Eminem sure knows how to get into the Christmas spirit.
Just one day before Christmas Eve, the rapper posted a photo on Instagram of himself dressed as Santa and humping a plastic reindeer.
Poor Rudolph. (RumorFix)
Is there any better way to say Merry Christmas than this personal message from Slim Shady? #SOHHWhatchaThink?
