Eminem’s Daughter Earns Royalty, Rap Legend Goes Old School W/ College Kids, Rap History Gets Destroyed
Testy Thursday. It’s a day filled with testing things out so why not start it out with Eminem’s daughter receiving royalty? Someone who needs to receive something is Coolio for pulling one of the most hilarious awkward moments in recent memory. Speaking of memories, it looks like one iconic hip-hop one is getting tore down? All this coming up in SOHH Whatcha Think.

1. Royalty Checker
It seems like it was just yesterday when Eminem rapped about his daughter Hailie and even featured her on one of his songs. It looks like she’s growing up pretty fast or at least fast enough to win the honor of being called a homecoming queen. People is all over this:
She was immortalized in a song when she was just a baby, and now Eminem’s daughter, Hailie, is famous at her high school. The rapper’s daughter was crowned homecoming queen of Chippewa Valley High School on Friday during a football game in Clinton Township, Mich., the Macomb Daily reports. Students and faculty chose the 17-year-old – who’s described by those who know her as a “smart, athletic and caring young woman” – as their queen after a vote. The teen’s dad, Eminem, 40, (aka Marshall Mathers III), watched the coronation from a classroom at the school so as not to take the attention away from his daughter. “Hailie came out with her mother Kim [Scott] when she was introduced with all the other kids but her father watched from inside the school because he didn’t want to cause a scene – he wanted Hailie to have her own moment,” one parent, who asked not to be identified, tells the paper. (People)
Is there any chance Hailie won the honor because of her father is? Probably not because she seems like a very attractive young lady who will grow up to make her parents proud. Now the guy who was named homecoming king? #SOHHWhatchaThink?
2. College Kids’ Paradise
If anyone ever felt bad for Coolio, they should just watch some new footage of him hanging out with college kids and see how much he is still respected for putting out one of the best 1990’s tracks of all time in “Gangsta’s Paradise.” Old to new, people respect him and that’s apparent in new footage. TMZ is all over it:
Coolio put on the ultimate acoustic performance last night … busting out “Gangsta’s Paradise” while chillin’ on a couch in a college kid’s living room … while a student with a guitar strummed out a beat.
The rapper was in England to play a gig — and met a couple of University of Central Lancashire students in the V.I.P. area.
We spoke with one of the students, Lorcan, who posted his account of the night on Reddit … and he tells us Coolio liked the kids and offered to cook the gang dinner (he’s a big-time chef nowadays).
After stopping by a grocery store to pick up the ingredients for a caprese salad, a peach crumble and something called “Chicken á la Daaaamn” … Coolio decided to treat the kids to a rendition of his biggest hit … and it was awesome. We’re told Coolio paid for everything.
After the performance, the student said Coolio was a “great guy” … who “had some very deep and profound thoughts on life and his time in the business.”
The whole thing is pretty awesome — check out the clip. (TMZ)
Is there any chance Coolio could have been paid for this type of appearance? It seems almost like a spoof but hopefully it was just him having a good time with some young kids that wanted him there. #SOHHWhatchaThink?
3. Never Can Say Good-Bye
Even though hip-hop has evolved vastly from what it was 20 years ago, the art of tagging or using graffiti will also be recognized as a core element to being a real emcee. Having skills like controlling a crowd and leaving tags throughout your neighborhood was always respected. It seems like one iconic tagging ground is going to the ground. LIC Post has the inside:
It’s official: The 5 Pointz graffiti icon will be coming down.
The application put forward by G&M Realty to demolish the site and erect 1,000 apartment units–370 more units than what is permitted under current zoning rules—was approved by the New York City Council this afternoon.
The council’s decision to approve the special zoning permit was influenced by an agreement struck between Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and the owners of G&M Realty, Jerry and David Wolkoff.
The Wolkoffs pledged to build and staff the buildings with union workers. Furthermore, they agreed to include 210 affordable apartment units—with a preference for local residents.
With the special zoning permit, the Wolkoffs are now able to develop two residential towers, one 47 stories high and the other 41 stories. They expect to demolish the graffiti mecca by the end of the year—and complete one of the towers by 2015. The developers have also agreed to offer the 5 Pointz graffiti group the opportunity to curate the nearly 10,000 square feet of art panels & walls in the building.
“The concessions provided under the compromise [with G&M Realty] will give Western Queens residents as well as artists a wide variety of interactive amenities future generations will benefit from,” Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said in a statement.
The development will include a public park that is over 32,000 square feet, 50,000 square feet of retail space and a 250 space public parking garage. (LIC Post)
Time will only tell what types of memorable photographs and footage will be saved prior to the building being completely done over. Hopefully its historic story will live on even after the renovations take place. #SOHHWhatchaThink?
