Tune in to the eight episode of H.O.Gcast brought to you by House of Guvera at http://houseofguvera.com/2015/10/h-o-g-cast-ep-8-myke-terry/?age-verified=d21213c586 as host Kellen Strauther aka DJ Keltronix interviews Myke Terry, former Bury Your Dead band member and lead singer, who just recently released a solo EP, Red Handed. Myke, who’s originally from Virginia and now resides in DTLA, talks about his music, growing up in Virginia, going on tour and more on this week’s HOGcast.

On his new EP Red Handed:

“It’s like a soul rock & roll kinda thing. Little bit of a departure from my old style but think it logically follows… I wrote the record, I played on a lot of the record… I can do it with a DJ and a drummer or I can do it with full band, we’ve done with both so far so it really just depends on what kind of a place we’re going to play and what kind of mood I’m trying to set.”

On growing up listening to heavy metal and discovering soul music:

“I grew up around a bunch of white kids. I grew up in the suburbs and I was one of very few black people. So either you were listening to R&B like Ralph Tresvant and Keith Sweat or you were listening to Metallica. Everyone was going crazy listening to the wild sh*t and I just gravitated toward that and it just took over from there… [Red Handed] is more soulful, it still has like a rock edge but it’s not screaming & headbanging. I’ve always been into that kind of music, like CeeLo Green, James Brown, all that kind of like smooth stuff. Back then, when I was coming up, I didn’t really know how to express myself like that and I wasn’t exposed to it so I didn’t really know how to explore that. So just in my travels and sh*t, I feel like I was able to be around that kind of music so it was like, oh sh*t I can make this kind, I vibe with this, and then I just fell into place.”

On relocating to LA:

“I didn’t even want to come here. I moved out of Richmond two years ago. Moved out, I went to Iowa, and I rode with a couple dudes out there, we were going to do a band real just like rock kind of stuff. We recorded that, we took like 3-4 months to write that record, and we were just like… alright we built this band up and we’re starting to get a buzz, now what are we going to do. My homie was like, yo lets go shop the record… we came out for a visit and that visit turned into moving out here and I haven’t been back ever since… It’s changed my life.”

On streaming music and today’s oversaturation of content:

“I think it’s tight cuz it gives you options of different stuff to listen to. But I could definitely see how it would take away from, or make it harder for artists out there trying to make it, cuz the market is so oversaturated. Literally everybody’s a star, everybody’s an artist, everybody’s doing it – I like it because you never know what’s gon’ cracking, who has ideas that are going to be amazing that everybody’s going to jam off of. But it definitely does make it difficult, it makes you stay on your toes…”

On if he misses going on tour:

“Hell yeah, I can’t wait to get back out on tour. I love touring man, that’s the bread and butter. For me, that’s the reward of being in the studio. Meeting our actual fans, seeing different counties and cities everyday and experiencing new stuff. That gives you more stuff to talk about. I’ve been pretty much on the road, or working to be back on the road.”
