[SOHH highlights a hot record on Tuesdays and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the track in Singled Out. After "Degrassi" alumni Deph Naught decoded "ILLEST," Texas rapper Lecrae dissects his "Was It Worth It" Church Clothes 2 record.]
"Was It Worth It" is dope. That's one of my standouts. It's a very meaningful song. It's a song that really resonates.
We were in the studio late night and my man Derek Minor, who is also featured on the song, we were just talking about the struggles of being men who grew up without their fathers and trying to be fathers and trying to figure this out.
It's like, "Man, if only our fathers knew the detriment or the void they caused by them not being around." We were like, "We should talk about it."
The drug era, the crack cocaine era, we talk about how that affected our lives.
We "knew" it was going to go on Church Clothes 2. It was one of those songs that was just special. It was just the realness. For me, that's what I'm all about. I know someone's going to connect to this.
On the song, I'm just bringing it in. When J. Cole was like, 'I let Nas down,' we've all felt like that at some point and time within hip-hop. When you look at a lot of these guys, a lot of us didn't grow up with our fathers. You hear Drake, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, all talking about daddy issues at some point in time in their rhymes so I was like, 'Let's make a song out of it.'
