[After recently releasing a follow-up to last year's Church Clothes, hip-hop artist Lecrae tells SOHH readers what he's learned from dropping his second official underground effort, Church Clothes, Vol. 2. and if the mixtape game has paid off.]

You gotta know what you're doing. You gotta make sure doing mixtapes is official for you. Mixtapes might not be good for everyone. I think mixtapes are good for me. I have a following, a consistent following, and kind of a niche audience but I think people hear my name and they have an idea but not a good understanding to what it's about.

The mixtape allowed me to be like, "Here, check it out. It's free." So it's been official for me. I'm about the people, anyway. I want to give them something that they want and make it so they don't have to pay for it if they don't want to.

People caught up [from the first mixtape], a majority of the people caught up. I think that any leader has to realize for every 1,000 people you influence, you're going to have some critics. If you're going to call shots, you gotta be able to take shots.

If you're going to put yourself out there, you have to be willing to stand there for what you believe in and follow your mission. As far as opposition, you just have to know it comes with the territory.
