News: Kim K Clueless Over Kanye's Warhol Painting, KimYe Being Scammed?
Thursday, Dec 5, 2013 2:30PM
Days after the cousin of late pop icon Andy Warhol revealed she had been hired to make a painting of reality superstar Kim Kardashian, new reports claim neither Kanye West or his fiancée are involved.
Despite KimYe being clueless, Warhol's cousin, Monica, said the painting may have been intended as a surprise present.
The artist who says she's Andy Warhol's cousin and claims Kanye West hired her to paint Kim Kardashian ... may be trying to have her own 15 minutes of fame ... because Kim says she has no clue who the woman is. Monica Warhol - a Tucson artist whose style is similar to Andy's - tells TMZ Kanye's people contacted her two weeks ago ... and gave her a pic of Kim and asked her to create a screen painting of the photo. Warhol says she's already created 9 different Kim paintings ... and says her pieces generally sell for $20K to $70K apiece. But sources close to Kim tell TMZ ... she's never heard of the woman ... and thinks the whole thing may be a scam or a way for Warhol to get publicity - her 15 minutes of fame. When we called Warhol back, she gave us an explanation for why she's being rebuffed by Kim & Kanye ... she thinks the painting may have been intended as a surprise gift ... and now that the surprise has been ruined ... K&K don't want it. Warhol says if this deal fall through, she'll put the artwork up for sale to anyone who wants to buy it. (TMZ)
Details of the unexpected power move started to scatter across the Internet this week.
The one thing that not even Kanye West can buy? A Warhol painting of his fiancee, Kim Kardashian. Turns out the rapper has figured out a way to accomplish just that, though. He's commissioned Andy Warhol's cousin Monica Warhol, an artist who lives and works in Tucson, Ariz., to paint Kardashian. "She's an icon. She's famous for nothing. Andy would have loved her," Monica told me. "Kim is beautiful. She's so manufactured. She looks like a human Barbie." Just as Andy did, Monica makes silk-screen works from photographs. "I never studied Andy. I never owned a book about him until about a year ago," she said. The mimicking of his style is not conscious. She loves screen-printing, she said, because it's "extremely physical." Unlike Andy, who delegated labor to a bunch of hired hands, Monica does all the work herself. (Page Six)
Although not as renowned as Andy, Monica Warhol has some credible work to her name including a painting of Miami rapper Flo Rida.
Monica, a mother of six, never met the Prince of Pop, who died in 1987 when she was 10 and growing up in Pittsburgh. "My grandfather and Andy's father were brothers. My Aunt Betty took me to the cemetery every week, where we'd pray over Andy's grave, because my aunt said he was pretty flaky and was probably in purgatory." Like Andy, she's found her niche in pop culture. Two portraits of the rapper Flo Rida that Monica made can be seen in the video for his song "How I Feel." She's painting a likeness of Lenny Kravitz, after meeting him in the Church Boutique in Los Angeles. She's also painted Richard and Robert Dupont, the twins who hung out at Warhol's Factory. But an artist's life is hard. "It would be easier to get cancer, because there might be a cure," Monica said. "When you are an artist, that's it. You can't change it." (Page Six)
When recently asked about his take on the paparazzi, Kanye ceased the moment to explain why Kim K's image shines brighter than supermodel Kate Upton's.
On Hollywood Icons: "I have a love-hate relationship with the paparazzi, but actually I love them because they are empowering us. They are empowering us over Vanity Fair that want to say that Kate Upton is Marilyn Monroe. Kate Upton ain't Marilyn Monroe, Kim is Marilyn Monroe." Kanye was referring to the Sports Illustrated model's most recent cover with the fashion magazine, where Upton channels the Hollywood icon for their 100th issue. (E! Online)
