Def Jam's 2 Chainz recently offered his take on the buzz behind artists like Kanye West and Drake landing big sneaker deals and if professional athletes' own lines can keep up with the stiff competition.
In Chainz's perspective, hip-hop artists can promote their signature kicks on a yearly basis while athletes have to worry about seasonal attention.
"Yeah, yeah, let me tell you something. Rap is all year round, we're not seasonal," Chainz said when asked if hip-hop artists could sell more sneakers than professional athletes. "See, what's going on is you got football season. And you got basketball season. And you got baseball season. There ain't no hip-hop season. So we're able to wear these shoes all year round. We are the rock stars. I do have an effect on pop culture, so at the end of the day, I think we can sell as many shoes as the next man can." (Sports Nation)
Young Money's Drake broke the news of joining Jordan Brand during a performance near Nike's Portland headquarters last Tuesday (December 3).
"Growing up, I'm sure we idolized this guy. He goes by the name of Michael Jordan, you understand what I'm saying?" Drake said to the crowd at the Rose Garden Arena during his tour stop in Portland, Oregon, on Tuesday night. Known for its microbreweries, chainsaw wielding and local hero Timber Joey, Portland is also home to Nike and Jordan Brand's corporate offices. "So today, I came to Portland and I officially became inducted into the Team Jordan family so I feel like I'm at home right now, if you understand what I'm talking about," Drake said without getting into specifics. "And it is a family and I don't take that word lightly." (MTV)
