Midwest rapper Nelly recently dished out his admiration for Young Money's Nicki Minaj and why it was a no-brainer to hook up with her for their "Get Like Me" collaboration.
When asked about working with the self-proclaimed Barbie, Nelly noted how much star power she brings time in and time out.
"If you gotta do a video, why not do it with Nicki? We tried to refresh memories and bring back some good old fashioned vibe videos. She's awesome man, you know she's a 360, she brings everything to a situation - to a song," he told BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. "She brings charisma. She brings star power as well as her vocals and lyrics and stuff like that. She's the full thing. She's great man, she loves hip hop and she's great at what she do. She appreciates the position that she's in. She kills it." (TV3)
The St. Lunatic also defended going with longtime producer Pharrell Williams for their track's beat.
"Pharrell has been a part of Nelly's career since the second album. Ever since Nellyville, we did "Hot in Herre" and then you know the next album we did "Flap Your Wings" and we continuously make good music," Nelly explained. "The thing about him is that, you know Pharrell is a limit pusher. You know he wants to push you to your limits but he wants to bring out the best in you. He's one of those few producers that you trust in the sense of letting him guide you into new territory." (TV 3)
Back in July, the threesome's must-watch music video premiered online.
Nelly keeps it slick and sexy in the black-and-white video for "Get Like Me." The St. Louis rapper calls on Nicki Minaj and Pharrell for the Colin Tilley-directed clip. Fresh off the video for Busta Rhymes' "#Twerkit," Nicki kicks off her heels and pops her booty, while Nelly plays the butt bongos and pops wheelies. "[Nicki] brings energy, charisma, and her star power, and I think that's what the video is about," said Nelly. "It's just about that star power and energy and the hypeness of the joint." Pharrell added, "When we get together, we like to do a song that evokes as much energy as possible." (Rap-Up)
Prior to dropping last month, Nelly spoke on putting together his new M.O. album.
"This [is] my seventh album and when you've been fortunate enough to be in any career 12-13 years, re-inventing yourself and staying hungry in that career is your biggest challenge," Nelly told The Juice. "You get a chance to do things and change things around but also having to remind yourself that you do have a core audience that like what they like from you. You have to take that core audience and try to get a new audience and combine that with walking the line that a lot of people haven't been able to do thus far." (The Juice)
