Young Money's Nicki Minaj appeared on "The Queen Latifah Show" this week and told the music mogul just how much of an impact she has had on her blossoming career.
During her appearance, Nicki used the opportunity to shower Queen Latifah with handfuls of compliments.
Appearing on Queen Latifah's new talk show, both the host and Nicki Minaj had a moment reflecting on the evolution of female rappers. As Nicki gave the Queen props for paving the way, both MCs were an awe of how far females have come in the genre. "I'm sitting here with a female rapper on a talk show started by a female rapper," said Latifah to Nicki. "This is a moment for me." Nicki then replied giving the mogul much respect stating, "You've opened so many doors for me and so many other women and it's insane because I always reference you when I talk about female rappers who've like kinda paved the way in terms of a businesswoman and mogul and just all around entertainer, and to be sitting here doing your show is just a great moment on hip-hop," she said. Earlier this year, Minaj paid homage to regional artists like Missy Elliott and the late Left Eye for inspiring her.
"My favorite [female rappers?] Foxy [Brown], [Lil'] Kim, Lauryn [Hill] and then Remy [Ma]," Nicki revealed in an interview. "Like, when Remy came out, I was very, very excited about her. But, with the Foxy, Kim and Remy, they were all from New York too so, and it's no disrespect to any other female rappers but those are the ones that I felt like, 'Oh, okay, yeah. I could get into that.' They sounded like me when I spoke and you know, I just thought they made an impact. But, I always loved Missy [Elliott] because she was playful and I always said, Missy and Left Eye, they weren't afraid to be goofy at times and I loved that as well." Back in 2010, Minaj acknowledged some other notable female vets like Miami's Trina and Latifah.
"I think there are many female rappers that I get along with," Minaj said in an interview with media personality Perez Hilton. "There have been so many female rappers that have congratulated me and given me genuine love. From Trina, who's my darling, to Missy Elliott, to Queen Latifah to Foxy Brown to Remy Ma, I mean, it goes on and on. That's what people don't understand. They think I'm the hated female rapper but it's like a lot of the girls have shown me love and come behind the scenes. Not even on the camera, just behind the scenes and have said, 'Congrats and keep up the good work.'" (Perez TV)
Fashion mogul Kimora Lee Simmons previously hit up SOHH and crowned Latifah the most underrated rapper of all time.
"The most underrated hip-hop artist in my opinion would be Queen Latifah. I feel like she's done so much to blaze a trail [for women] and everybody gives her her props for that, but I don't know if we really embrace [her music]. We used to love her and she's an amazing artist. I love her and she's also a friend of mine. She's like one of my kids' aunties. She's an all-around amazing talent and she's had an amazing career when you look closely. But in terms of hip-hop music and what Latifah has done as an artist, I'm not so sure if I hear Latifah playing as much as I probably play it at home. One of my favorite Latifah records is "Ladies First". And along with Latifah, I love MC Lyte, she's great as well." (SOHH Underrated)
