News: Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz & More Control BET Hip Hop Awards '13

West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz and more made their presence known over the weekend by dominating a taped version of next month's BET Hip Hop Awards 2013.
Hosted by Snoop, Dogg took on various duties throughout the evening which included joke-telling and appearing in various skits.
Once inside, things kicked off fairly quickly; The lights dimmed and the screens flashed as video came up of James Lipton, host of "Inside the Actors Studio," earnestly asking Snoop Dogg, "With so much drama in the LBC, how hard is it being Snoop D. O. Double G.?" An unexpected sight, complete with profanity and those hilarious facial expressions Lipton is known for, the awards started off on a good note. Then came Snoop's monologue. The Long Beach native is witty in his own weed smoke-induced way and those familiar with his interviews and the like, know this. Why have Snoop Dogg onstage stiffly telling written jokes? The skits that they incorporated into the show portrayed Snoop at his best: Snoop at a card table with Daz, Snoop as a DJ, Snoop as a commentator with Kevin Hart's hilarious alter-ego Chocolate Drop, who as always, had the crowd in tears. Much like past years, the entire evening was highlighted by handfuls of notable performances.
The 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards featured a stellar line-up of performances Saturday night (Sept. 28) in Atlanta. Among the hip-hoppers who graced the stage included Rick Ross, French Montana, Yo Gotti, 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar, Bone, Thugs-N-Harmony and others. Meek Mill was the night's first performer. The Philly spitfire performed the 'Dreams and Nightmare (Intro)' from his debut album of the same name. He then followed that with the fan-favorite track, 'Levels.' Elsewhere, Deuces performed 'Fork' and 'Used 2? from his second album, 'B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time' before bringing out Mannie Fresh and Juvenile for a rendition of 'Back That Thang Up.' Three of the biggest heavyweights in rap -- Future, DJ Khaled and Rozay -- formed like voltron onstage for a performance of 'Honest,' 'I Wanna Be with You' and 'No Games,' respectively. Kendrick Lamar, who reportedly destroyed the Cypher portion of the BET Hip-Hop Awards, rapped 'Money Tree' with Jay Rock, which was then followed with 'Collard Green' his duet with ScHoolboy Q. Hip-hop icon MC Lyte received some special recognition at the Saturday taping.
MC Lyte said she was initially nervous following a video tribute that honored the veteran rapper for her career achievements at the eighth annual BET Hip-Hop Awards Saturday. Once MC Lyte gathered herself, she thanked a host of people who helped further her career. She urged the female rappers who have come after her to continue to shine and push the genre forward. "Please keep the dream alive, I am with you," said MC Lyte, who was given the "I Am Hip-Hop Award" at the taped award show at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. The show airs on Oct. 15. Rapper Eve handed the award to MC Lyte, who became known in the rap game in the late `80s and `90s. She relied on wit rather than sexuality and rapped with a man's bluster and braggadocio. She delivered hits such as "Cha Cha Cha," "Lyte as a Rock," "Poor Georgie" and "I Cram to Understand U." (New York Daily News)
Despite the theme, big awards did not dominate the star-studded gathering.
The BET Hip-Hop Awards this year was heavy on hip-hop, but light on actual awards. BET presented only three awards during the show; none of which the winners weren't in attendance to accept. A$AP Rocky took an award for the Perfect Combo category for "F*ckin' Problems" which Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz accepted in his absence. Drake won the People's Champ category for "Started From the Bottom," but the rapper was nowhere to be found. A$AP Ferg took the Rookie award over Joey BadA$$, Action Bronson and others, but he wasn't there to accept either. (Billboard)
The 2013 Hip-Hop Awards, packed with performances, airs Tuesday, October 15 at 8pm EST.
