Brooklyn rapper Maino is the latest hip-hop artist to share an opinion on Kendrick Lamar proclaiming himself the "King of New York" and pointed out why the crown is too big for one artist.
In Maino's perspective, New York rappers have no one to blame but themselves for allowing K. Dot to feel confident enough to make the statement on Big Sean's "Control" track this week.
"It's kind of good that it happened because I feel like here, we kind of did a lot of d*ck-sucking, a lot of c*ck-licking for a long time," Maino explained. "We lost our culture, it's no such thing as a New York sound anymore. Look at Kendrick Lamar's perspective though. Here's a guy from Cali, he comes here, he had the number one album in the country at one point, he comes here, he sells out Roseland Ballroom, he gets more spins on New York radio than New York artists. If I was doing it in LA, I'd be the King of LA too. So, from a competitive rap standpoint, I see where he was able to say that at." (Street Heat TV)
The rapper also pointed out a few notable radio hitmakers capable of being considered kings of the Empire State.
"It's a couple other kings of New York," Maino added. "[DJ] Khaled, [Rick] Ross, [Lil] Wayne, Drake. They're the kings of New York too. Let's keep it all the way one hundred. ... I'm talking about the music that you hear. When I open up my window, when I'm in the streets -- this is the music that I predominantlly hear." (Street Heat TV)
Fellow BK rapper Papoose shared a different perspective and dropped his "Control" remix diss record at Lamar this week.
"Tell Kendrick and TDE they need to lay off the PCP/ Far from the king, this is the city of BDP/ You'll never be a real west coast artist like Eazy E/ You f*cking joke, we laughing at you like hehehe/ Ya'll probably stick dildos in each other like Stevie G/ I mean Stevie J on that sex tape with E-V-E/Lil' Sean, Big Sean, let me see ID/Why you always say B.I.G.?/You ain't Bigge, you could D.I.E/Every time I hear you, you getting cornier like E-Y-E." ("Control" Remix)
On the "Control" track, Kendrick unloads some heavy bars and name-drops rap's biggest names.
Big Sean, 25, took to Twitter to release his latest single, "Control" to his over 4 million Twitter followers, which features 26-year-old rapper Kendrick Lamar. "I'm usually homeboys with the same n****s i'm rhymin wit/But this is hip hop and them n****s should know what time it is/And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller/I got love for you all but I'm tryna murder you n****s/Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n****s." He also has a verse that says: "I'm Machiavelli's offspring, I'm the king of New York/King of the Coast, one hand, I juggle them both." (Hollywood Life)
