[SOHH highlights a hot record each Tuesday and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After Kidd Kidd decoded his "Life On" tribute, Rostrum Records beauty Vali breaks down her new Wiz Khalifa-assisted "Dimes" anthem.]
I'm not sure if you're familiar with my other music but I was definitely headed into more of a pop 'ish sound for a little bit but I have a lot of urban songs. So it was just about finding the sound that really fit me.
I've been really grinding and trying to figure that out in Los Angeles. I got into the studio with this producer and was like, "Yo, I kind of want to do something different that I haven't really done before." And then Yung Berg also co-wrote it with me, so he was in the studio. He was like, 'You can do a screw voice,' and I was like, 'Yo, that's dope.' We kind of just started vibing and then I kind of wrote this nursery rhyme about grinding and then having a bunch of hot girlfriends.
I was really feeling the record so I actually tweeted Wiz [Khalifa] and said, 'Yo, I really want you on this record.' I sent it to him and he liked it. He was like, 'Yo, I'm down. I want to do it.' So he just got into the studio, laid down his verse, sent it back to me, and was like, 'Yo, this verse is so hard. Let's just do it.'
Literally within two weeks, we put together a music video, shot it, he went on tour and then we released the song. So it was really put together very last minute.
The music video is definitely interesting. It's very visual. We have an alligator in the video. Me and Wiz have a scene in this car, it was an Impala '64, silver and it had switches. Actually, Wiz was supposed to be the one in the driver's seat with the switches but during the video shoot he said, 'Yo, I really want Vali to do it. She should be in the driver's seat and I should be in the passenger seat.' So I got to flip switches for the first time.
It was really dope. I'm actually really good at it. I was proud of myself. We have an alligator, an Impala and then I have a little version of me. I casted a little girl and did her hair like mine, color her hair pink like mine, we got girls on swing sets. It's a different type of video I've never done but it's my favorite one. I cannot wait to release it.
For the past year, Vali has been recording tracks with producers such as Mark Baston (Alicia Keys, Beyoncé), Tommy Brown (Black Eyed Peas), and Jim Jonsin (Lil Wayne, Usher, Beyoncé). She is now releasing her new single "Dimes" featuring Wiz Khalifa.
