[SOHH highlights a hot record each Tuesday and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After Ying Yang Twins and Mr. Collipark decoded their "Make It Jump" smash, Indiana's own Nyzzy Nyce breaks down his new "I Just Rather" anthem.]
I actually wrote "I Just Rather" at about three or four o'clock in the morning and I was high out of my mind. I was listening to that beat and I just laid something down to it.
I wanted it to sound a little bit different and it was actually my first time actually doing a hook like that, with the three different layers on it and it came out pretty dope so I ran with it.
I've been shooting music videos for about two years now but since I got with Miles Meyer Films, I've been shooting a lot of videos. This year, I probably have shot at least ten videos so far.
I remember being high out of my mind and just thinking of things to do in the video. We came up with this idea of me coming down this alley like I'm in pain because I need to smoke. But the two things that we wanted to get across was the pain of wanting to smoke and drink and also me transforming into this wolf.
That was the two parts of the video people needed to understand. In the beginning, when I was staggering, I'm drinking and I'm high but the point of me staggering is I'm about to turn into this wolf. So we actually shot it with a few cool things we've never done before in any other video.
It actually turned out better than we thought it would because it was our first time trying all of these new little things like when I'm looking at myself drinking that bottle and then there's the slow-motion with the smoke and the freeze frames.
The mask was one of the last parts of the video because we were kind of iffy. We went out to a shop that had a lot of crazy masks and we went in there and I didn't see anything I was liking but then I saw the wolf mask and was like, "Hey man, lets try this out." We ended up getting it and I did the little dance in the alley and it turned out pretty dope. It was a bit creepy and that's what we wanted.
We wanted something that we could do that fans would remember when they saw the video.
It was pretty dope. I loved it.
Nyzzy's debut album "Have A Nyce Day" is slated for release in Fall 2013. The album features Nyzzy's laidback vocals over an eclectic array of trap-infused drums, feel good melodic synths and trunk-rattling 808s. Fans can anticipate videos for the singles "Live it up" "My City" and "Superstar" later in the year. Nyzzy is a rare breed of an artist who combines his sensibility for social entrepreneurship, altruistic nature, and passion-fueled lyrical ability to create infectious music. He says, "I do something, I fall into it, and I don't stop."
