With Slum Village's long-awaited Evolution slated to drop next month, the group's frontman T3 hit up SOHH to address the album's eye-catching cover art and clarify comparisons to Lil Wayne's I Am Not A Human Being II artwork.
Despite both projects donning a butterfly, T3 said Weezy F. Baby did not have any influence on the group's new LP cover.
"Ah, come on, his is like a red and black butterfly," T3 laughingly told SOHH when asked about the comparison. "You know what, we used this guy from Japan. It's a guy in Japan and this is like our third album cover. We had like two other emblems but we decided to go with this one because we liked it. I ain't really worried about [the comparisons]. His is all right and I like ours. It's fine, I don't trip about that. I know what you're saying, the similarities are there. You're looking at Detroit [on the Evolution cover]." (SOHH)
He also revealed what type of procedure SV goes through when coming up with artwork.
"What I like to do is give my artist time to do his thing," T3 added. "I give him a concept. I deal with people I trust. It's just like after you've worked with someone for so long, you shouldn't always have to go over their back. You might add some pieces here and there, but for the most part, I trust the guy's artwork. I told him, 'The concept is evolution, why don't you give me a few ideas you're thinking of.' Some stuff I'll think of everything, but in this case, I just like what he did and I knew he was going to be creative and bring an aspect." (SOHH)
Over the winter, Lil Wayne decoded the meaning behind using a butterfly for his I Am Not A Human Being II release.
"(Kanye) said, you know, man, let me do your cover. I saw the cover and I approved it. He had an explanation behind it - he said, he chose the moth butterfly thing because it has so many different stages of life, and it goes through so many forms and changes, and no one can figure it out, and it's always beautiful. At a time it's ugly and at a time it's beautiful too. And that's me." (NOLA)
Barring any setbacks, Slum Village's Evolution album will land on store shelves June 25th and a week earlier for pre-order purchases.
The gradual development of something into a more complex or better form. That's us.. ever evolving. After 20 years in the business, we find ourselves doing this album on our own, the way we want to... that's why we want you... yeah you.. to join us in the process. (Pledge Music)
