[SOHH highlights a hot record each Tuesday and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After Lil Debbie broke down her new "Ratchets" anthem, Finatik N Zac's Finatik unravels A$AP Rocky's hard-hitting "Long. Live. A$AP" track.]
A$AP Rocky is killing it right now. As far as the "Long. Live. A$AP" record is concerned, we, myself and Zac, signed to Jim Jonsin and we had an opportunity to get in the studio with Jim and A$AP. We recorded this in Miami in the studio with A$AP and he recorded his whole vocals there and we gave him the track and he actually wrote his verses back in LA or New York or something.
We all went into the studio together and it was me, Jim, Zac as well as Rico Love. He's one of the most amazing songwriters to date. He's crazy. He wrote the chorus. He was a part of the track and the produciton and then we got with A$AP and a guitarist that we work with and it was just vibing all throughout the room.
It's funny because we played A$AP a bunch of beats but he's such a visionary. As an artist, you can tell what he wants from the production to the lyrics to the raps and everything. He just came in there and was like, "Okay, let's just make a track on the spot." So we started vibing out and then it just sort of started with some little sounds that were used in the production, behind the beat and then we came with the 808-type drums and everything.
I started putting some chopped up vocals in there and it was crazy because A$AP knew exactly what he wanted. He was moving all around the room, almost directing in a sense because he knew exactly what he wanted and if he heard something, he'd say, "That's crazy! Do this." He was there from the beginning of the process to the end of it.
You could just tell the dude A$AP was on his A-game sh*t. He just seemed to know everything about the production stuff and it was just crazy man. The thing about it is it was like a party in there. We had this big bottle Smirnoff Vodka and everybody was just drinking and having fun while we were making this track.
By the end of it, the whole track came out amazing and I'm really happy with how it came about. Every line on that track is f*cking crazy.
Finatik N Zac are an Australian duo signed to producer Jim Jonsin's "Rebel Rock Entertainment". The duo consists of Michael "Finatik" Mule and Isaac "Zac" Deboni. By the time Finatik had reached eighteen, he had accomplished what most high school students had only dreamed of, and had acquainted himself with some of hip hop's biggest names such as DJ Premier, Method Man & Redman, Jurrasic 5, Black Eyed Peas, Mix Master Mike etc... During this time, Finatik continued to broaden his skills and decided that he wanted to be more involved in creating and developing the beats that he had become so used to playing on the decks weekly at resident nightclubs of up to 5,000 people all around Australia and Asia. Word spread fast that this popular young DJ had retired from battles and would be pursuing his production career. It was then that he was introduced to another Perth production heavyweight, Isaac Deboni, known as Zac, who had completed a diploma in audio engineering from the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) straight out of high school.
