[With huge hip-hop stars behind bars from Ja Rule to Young Buck, former convict Prodigy speaks on the digital New York jail-based superstore Send A Package and why a few bucks can go a long way.]

The whole relationship with Send A Package came from getting in touch with [founder] Chris [Barrett] over at Send A Package for an event he was doing on Thanksgiving and it was for a charity called "In Arm's Reach" and basically it's for kids with parents in jail.

Since I've been home, I've been trying to do a lot more things like that, helping out with the kids and the kids that are locked up, doing things like that. I did the charity event for him, I performed at the event and I started learning more about Send A Package and I was feeling what they were doing.

They're just trying to help out the brothers and sisters that's locked up in jail and also the families that suffer from their loved ones being locked up. That's where the whole relationship started.

As far as with the Send A Package and its catalogue, I suggested that we throw some instrumental records in there because they do music as well as food, clothes and cosmetics. I was suggesting we do some instrumental tapes in the music section because when I was locked up, I'm a songwriter, I don't like writing to other people's beats.

It was hard for me to get inspiration from a hip-hop instrumental CD with all of the beats you've heard already. It was a good idea to come up with this instrumental cassette we could throw in the catalogue and just have different producers that I work with and you can have original beats for artists that's locked up or songwriters in jail trying to master their craft, it's a little bit easier for your creativity.

So I think other people would feel the same way. If you got family locked up, it's the best thing. If you have friends locked up, this is the best thing you can do for them. Send them a little something, that little bit really is a lot in jail. A lot of people don't understand that.

Sending somebody ten dollars or even a can of tuna fish, it really helps. We need that in jail. Don't think you don't have a lot of money to send or you don't got enough money to buy someone food out of the catalogue. You don't need that much, just a little bit.

Even if it's just a little bit every now and then, it's greatly appreciated when you're locked up.
