[SOHH highlights a hot record each Tuesday and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After R.A. the Rugged Man explained his new "The People's Champ" anthem, Interscope singer Kayla Brianna breaks down her Meek Mill-assisted "I Got That" single and music video.]
I was actually recording my album in Atlanta and I picked out the "I Got That" track. I had a whole bunch of different tracks being played to me but this one definitely stood out to me. It was really catchy without even any words to it. The whole song is just catchy.
I chose that track to record and I wanted a feature on it. Meek Mill is one of my favorite rappers so we reached out to him and he liked the record. I was in the studio with Meek Mill, when he was recording, and he was like, "Tell me what you like and what you don't like." He basically freestyled for like an hour. There's a whole extra eight bars that we didn't even use.
He's just a really talented rapper, obviously, he's definitely on the come-up and someone everyone should be looking for.
Of course [my dad, former NBA champion] Kenny Smith helped, I can't even lie, he does help. But at the same time, sometimes I want my dad to be a part of it and sometimes I want him to stay on the side because he'll get too involved in trying to be on the track or something crazy, but no, that definitely helped and then we just happened to be in Atlanta at the same time and one of the producers I worked with had a contact with him. [The biggest thing is] he really liked the record.
As far as the video, we shot it in Los Cabos [, Mexico] and I kind of wanted to do something different so I wanted the motorcycles, very Bonnie and Clyde. I really like that kind of idea. It was just a lot of fun, high-energy and something different. I really wanted the video to be fun.
Just when music, arguably, has reached its most mundane state, a fresh-faced and fierce talent is set to rock the world, one song at a time. Interscope Records' latest signee, Kayla Brianna, a R&B music darling, is the perfect amalgamation of brains, beauty and unparalleled talent. As she reminisces on "California Dreaming" as a young girl and living the glory days as the daughter of a retired basketball legend, Kayla B. credits influences including Brandy, Aaliyah and Keri Hilson for her sound, a fusion of classic pop, R&B and jazz, giving her a delivery reminiscent of the '90's.
