[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name who they feel is the most underrated emcee in hip-hop. After Audubon gave Immortal Technique the title earlier this week, rap veteran R.A. the Rugged Man crowns Super Lover Cee SOHH Underrated.]
There's so many underrated artists that influenced me. Especially growing up in the era that I grew up in, a lot of these cats didn't get to make no money or didn't get known on a commercial level.
The people who really know those guys are the really knowledgeable ones because most don't. A lot of them might know Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer but might not know some of the greatest from the era I grew up on.
One person that's extremely underrated and never gets mentioned and who has some of the most brutal flows, dope content and was just one of the most dope emcees that I grew up on and loved was a cat named Super Lover Cee.
He had the group, Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud. He was produced by the great Paul C. Paul was a great, great hip-hop producer who taught Large Professor and everybody that was making beats in the '90's and 80's seemed like they learned from Paul.
Everybody from New York producing, it all came from this guy Paul. He had passed away early. Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud was a group that he worked with and the beats were banging. His flows and his verses were so phenomenal and his records were so dope.
That's just one guy off the top of the head but I could name a hundred. He was definitely a huge influence on me and nobody really mentions him the way he should be mentioned.
Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud were a duo from Astoria, Queens. Casanova Rud didn't really rap that often at the time, Super Lover Cee was the main one and Casanova Rud would come in and rap every once in a while.
It was kind of like Jaz-O and Jay-Z, how Jaz was the main rapper and Jay would come through to rap every once and a while.
Chill Rob G is on my top five most underrated of all-time. If I didn't say Super Lover Cee, I probably would have said Chill Rob G. It's amazing and great to hear that Styles P named him [for SOHH Underrated].
Film producer, writer, magazine journalist and legendary rapper in the hip-hop underground, R.A. Thorburn better known to the world as R.A. the Rugged Man, was the target of a nine-label bidding war when just a teenager, and signed to Jive Records in 1992 and Priority/Capital Records in 1998 before going independent in 2004 in which he released his indie hit album "Die, Rugged Man, Die!" which became a worldwide success. R.A.'s musical resume not only speaks for itself, but has resulted in his teaming with some of the greatest artists in rap history - from Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, and the late great Notorious B.I.G. to multi-platinum producers Erick Sermon, Trackmasters, DJ Quick, Alchemist, Havoc, Buckwild, and Ayatolah.
