[With the Academy Awards finally here and tons of highly-acclaimed movies going up for Best Picture, Oscar-winning producer DJ Paul gives SOHH readers his personal take on tonight's biggest category and which film is destined for gold.]
Best Picture Nominees: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty
Argo: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin
Argo? I haven't been to the movies in a while because they bring out so much bullsh*t these days, I'm almost scared to go to the movies. But Argo, I wanted to see that one. I saw the commercial and it looked crazy.
Djano Unchained: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington
Now Django was good. Everyone loved that movie. It's relevant to the hip-hop culture because there were rappers that told me to go and see that motherf*cker. I remember I was in the studio and people were just telling me how crazy it was, this and that. Hip-hop f*cks with Quentin Tarantino because he f*cks with hip-hop. He's always hanging out with RZA. We f*ck with Quentin. I go all the way back with him when I saw From Dusk 'Til Dawn with George Clooney and he was all tatted up in the movie. I got my tattoos based on that movie.
I think Django should get the Best Picture award. I think they should get it. F*ck all that other sh*t with people hating on it. It should get it. I'm a big Jamie Foxx fan, too. So anything he does, I'm down with it.
Les Miserables: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried
I know this movie is going to win something because it's a classic. Everybody knows that. Even before I even knew what it was, just being around and going out to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, I would see that movie poster everywhere. I would say, "What is this, some type of popular play?" That's a given right there. This movie is going to win something at the Academy Awards.
Life of Pi: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Gerard Depardieu
I didn't get to see this movie. I may have seen the trailer.
Lincoln: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
I think Lincoln is going to do something at the Academy Awards. I think it's going to do something because of the historical context but also because Daniel Day-Lewis plays the sh*t out of that part, man. If you look at the dude that plays Lincoln with and without the make-up, he looks like a totally different person. He looks like a totally different person just based off that alone. I think this is going to do something.
DJ Paul's Prediction:
If this was ten years ago, I would say the Les Miserables would have won Best Picture. But now, it's hard to say because Three 6 Mafia won for Hustle & Flow, Jamie Foxx won an Academy Award [a few years ago], it wasn't like the old Oscars where it was straight traditional. You would think back then that the traditional films that the older white crowds would choose would be the winner. They switched it up and started getting a bit different with it. If I had to pick, I'd say Django should win Best Picture but I don't know if they're going to give it to Tarantino. I would have to put my money on Argo or Les Miserables probably winning the Oscar for Best Picture. I don't really think Lincoln for Best Picture but you never know at these things.
