UGK's Bun B recently gave his take on today's hip-hop scene and which rappers stand out the most from the United Kingdom's Dizzee Rascal to homegrown artists like Slaughterhouse's Royce Da 5'9.
Bun credited hip-hop artists like Shady Records' Yelawolf for living up to what an actual emcee embodies.
"Dizzee Rascal, from the U.K., is probably one of the most underestimated emcees, period, on the planet. His technical skills are dare I say almost unmatched by any other emcee,," Bun said in an interview. "Yelawolf I think is an incredible emcee. I think as we emcees say breath control, his ability to put together as many words as possible before he has to take another breath. It's something that not a lot of people can do, but he's learned how to construct songs based off of that breath control, which I think is extremely impressive." ("Sway In The Morning")
The Houston rap veteran also shined the light on Aftermath protégé Kendrick Lamar.
"Having Dr. Dre as an overseer definitely helps, but he's very tenacious. He's very raw and he's hype all the time. He's very excited to be rapping at any given moment," Bun said, referring to Aftermath's Kendrick Lamar. "Probably Royce Da 5'9,. [He's] probably the most underrated lyricist in the game right now. I think his catalog, when you go back and look at it verse-for-verse, it's going to be really hard for any emcee to really stand up against." ("Sway In The Morning")
Recently, Mobb Deep's Havoc hit up SOHH and labeled Royce one of his favorite Slaughterhouse members.
"His lyrical wordplay is just crazy, you know what I'm saying? It's like no matter how many times I try to do that, it's like, it's hard," Hav told SOHH, referring to his admiration for "Tell Me To My Face collaborator Royce Da 5'9. "He makes it sound easy. It wasn't even really a hard decision to want to get Royce for a feature because I also produced a track on [2011's] Bad Meets Evil, that was a record Eminem and Royce Da 5'9 did. So, you know, I already kind of had a feel for him and then with the Slaughterhouse, he was one of my favorite artists out of the group, even though I like all of them equally, he just kind of stands out to me." Last year, West Coast veteran Ras Kass crowned Royce SOHH Underrated.
"Royce Da 5'9 is just an incredible emcee. But so is everybody in Slaughterhouse. I've known him for a long time and I know his manager as well. So I'm aware of his music. I remember coming out of prison and living with Xzibit, coming out of the record store with "Make It Count (MIC)." I hadn't even seen him, I just hit him like, "Yo, this sh*t's banging!" Xzibit got on the phone singing the song." (SOHH Underrated)
