[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name who they feel is the most underrated emcee in hip-hop. After Masta Ace gave Wordsworth and MF Doom the title earlier this week, New York rapper Torae crowns Homeboy Sandman and Skyzoo SOHH Underrated.]
Man, for me, I'm really excited about this guy Homeboy Sandman. He's out of Queens, New York and he's definitely been getting some looks but in this day and age, when you're not on a major and don't have a million dollar budget breaking an artist to make sure they're a household name, this guy is just a phenomenal emcee.
His wordplay is incredible. His stage presence is exciting. When he raps, he's realy talking about something. He's not just putting a bunch of words together just to make them sound good.
At the end of his verses, there's a message there. He's one of my favorites but I could go on a tangent of people I feel are underrated. I'm listening to guys like Jay Electronica and Kendrick Lamar bringing lyricism back to the forefront and I'm wondering, "Are you [fans] not listening to what Skyzoo's been doing for the last few years?"
Skyzoo is amazing. Outside of being one of my closest friends, he's one of my most favorite emcees. Ever. Those are my SOHH Underrated guys. The Sha Stimuli's, myself and I could go on and on and on but those guys definitely need more light and recognition.
All they really need is the audience to get behind them and push them. They have a fan base but you've got to expand your fan base. And by doing that, word of mouth really works. If you're a fan of these guys, tell a friend to make sure to tell a friend. That's how it's going to continue to grow.
It's not a lot of radio outlets for new artists and the music that they're making and not compromising themselves. It's for the people to really get out there and let it be known.
Torae (born Torae L. Carr) is an American rapper from the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, New York. Career, Torae gained recognition by collaborating with DJ Premier and Marco Polo. He and Polo went on to receive critical acclaim for their collaborative LP entitled Double Barrel.
