[With the days of running alongside "Gucci Gucci" hitmaker Kreayshawn behind her, former White Girl Mob member Lil Debbie gives SOHH readers the inside on why she's picked up the microphone.]
I have a song with Kreayshawn and a couple of my friends. We used to call ourselves the Cupcake Princess Ponies and this is when we were 15. If you remember Lil Mama's "Lip Gloss," well we did a song and we're saying, "My earrings are rockin'," based on bamboo gold earrings. That was like my first rap song.
After that, I thought it was fun but I grew up around a lot of rappers. In the Bay Area, a lot of people are rappers and you all know each other. It's just a party of the industry and I got into it by shooting music videos with Kreayshawn. I've always been in the rap industry. I didn't really want to be a rapper for a very long time.
Kreayshawn kicked me out of White Girl Mob and she was dissing me and at that moment in time, I thought, "All these f*cking people hate me." I used to get so much hate mail from Kreayshawn fans. I used to get a lot of hatred from them and I would just fight it, like, "I don't want to be a rapper. I'm in the fashion industry, I love fashion, that's my passion, that's what I do. I'm f*cking pretty. Look at these f*cking earrings and eyes of mine."
So I thought, "Everybody already f*cking hates me, so why don't I just go and record a song?" So I went to the studio and I recorded a song. I told [rapper] Riff Raff, "Dude, I'm not rapping with you. I'm only doing one song and that's it."
I put out the song and I got a mixture of responses. I got good responses and bad responses and thought, "This is kind of fun. I'm going to do another song." So I did another song.
All this happened, and I'm going to keep it real, it created from hatred from other people. Hatred from other people and them saying I'm not going to be sh*t inspired me. So I figured, "Okay, you say I'm not going to be sh*t, so I'm going to show you how f*cking easy this is and I'm going to show you I can f*cking crush you."
At first it started off with me just wanting to prove everybody wrong but after a while, that's just a lot to put on your shoulders along with everything I have to do all day. At the end of the day, I just want to create and I want to be known for, "She did 'that' different. She wore 'this' and 'that.' She let the skinny girls know that they have a chance." I'm trying to create a lifestyle brand for the skinny girls or the girls that couldn't make it in this industry.
I'm doing it for the art and the visuals and I'm also doing it for the people who doubted me but now it's more for myself and showing I can really do it and proving I can be someone that changes or influences the game.
