West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar has addressed sending heat waves across computer screens courtesy of his recently released "Backseat Freestyle" music video and narrowed in on whether or not the featured woman in it is actually mystery gal "Sherane."
Although they strike similar appearances, Lamar said the woman is not the actual teenage crush who inspired his gold-selling good kid, m.A.A.d city LP.
Kendrick has confirmed that he is working on a visual component to good kid, m.A.A.d city and though that's still being worked out creatively, he did give fans a small taste with his "Backseat Freestyle" by including hisdad in the clip. " 'Backseat Freestyle,' was really just its own entity. It was just me having fun, putting those skits in there, puttin' my pops in there," he said of the video he dropped at the top of the year. Then there is the scene where a half-naked Sherane shakes her rump for the camera as Kendrick stands beside her. Well, the model in the video isn't Kendrick's childhood crush, but they bare a strong resemblance, he says. "Nah, that wasn't the real Sherane," he confirmed while laughing. "But it was a great, great imaginary -- clone of Sherane for sure." (MTV)
The music video's black-and-white visual premiered online earlier this month.
Kendrick Lamar has been hinting at a short film inspired by good kid, m.A.A.d city. It's unclear if this new video for "Backseat Freestyle" is part of that project, but the self-directed black-and-white clip visualizes many of the album's greatest moments, including Papa Lamar and his goddamn Domino's, the voluptuous Sherane, and scenes of the Eiffel Tower. Rather than only focus on his Compton, California hometown, Kendrick takes viewers all the way out to Paris in his clip.
Kendrick Lamar, the king lyricist of Compton, returns today with a very dope, and highly anticipated, video for his track "Backseat Freestyle". The Hit-Boy produced track gets a rather fitting visual in which we find the star MC taking us from the gritty streets of Compton to the glitzy streets of Paris. In the middle of the clip we get interrupted by Kendrick's father giving him a call to get an ETA on his Domino's Pizza. But then its back to the bars as Kendrick spits the second verse of his track while a beautifully built female twerks on the drivers side of his whip. We then head with Kendrick over to Paris for the third and final verse, showing his rise from Compton to worldwide. (Stupid Dope)
Recently, Lamar talked about wanting to put a mini-film behind the album and what real entertainers he viewed as ideal to portray select characters.
"Visuals... When I call it a short film, I don't just call it that for the sake of the album. So that's a hint," Lamar said when asked what is next for him. "[I could see myself] directing for sure. I haven't really thought about starring in it... I can, because it is me and my life. [Who'd play me?] Anyone in the world? It would have to be somebody... there's one kid on The Wire, Tristan Wilds [who played Mike Lee]. [Mom?] I probably get Taraji Henson. [And Sherane?] I would love to see Rihanna in my movie [laughs]. Looking at this cover right here, man." (GQ)
