Miami rapper Rick Ross has reportedly made an announcement to pack up and move his entire Maybach Music Group company from Warner Bros. Music to rival label Atlantic Records.
While details are still gathering, Ricky Rozay reportedly broke the news Monday (December 10) night.
Now this comes out of nowhere. During his chat with Miami's 99 Jamz last night, Rick Ross announced that his imprint Maybach Music Group has moved from Warner Music to its subsidiary Atlantic Records. The revelation wasn't caught on video which we posted but the radio channel did confirm it on their Twitter. This is an interesting turn of events since Young Jeezy is currently the Senior VP of A&R at Atlantic Records which means he's bound to have a big say in the music MMG releases from here on. Or we suppose. (HHNM)
Ross' decision comes weeks after close business associate Lyor Cohen left his position as Warner Music Group's chairman.
In making the announcement, Cohen said, "To all the artists and employees who live and die for the music every day, and who personally sacrifice for the good of the creative process: 'keep on keepin' on' in the tradition of a company that respects and honors the artistic community." Len Blavatnik, Chairman and founder of Access Industries, said, "I personally want to thank Lyor for his dedication and contributions to Warner Music. He has been both a business partner and personal friend and I wish him only the best." Stephen Cooper, WMG's CEO, said, "Lyor Cohen has built something very special here. While we understand his desire to move on to his next challenge, the enduring success of our recorded music division will serve as a great testament to the progress we've made during Lyor's time at WMG. We are grateful for Lyor's contributions, and we wish him the best. I'm confident that given the strength of our talented management team in Recorded Music, we'll be able to drive further success." Following Cohen's departure, the company's senior label executives will report directly to Stephen Cooper. (Market Wire)
This could potentially cause a dispute as his rap rival Young Jeezy landed a position as Atlantic Records senior vice president of A&R last summer.
Taking to his Twitter page today (Aug. 9), Jeezy acknowledged his new position -- in a message that was also retweeted by Atlantic -- by saying "From the streets to the Boardroom. SVP of A&R at Atlantic Records I am. Let's Get it!" The news was reportedly broken by DJ Greg Street of V103 out of Atlanta, and was confirmed by Jeezy's production coordinator DJ Folk last night. Back in February 2011, Ross made history by signing his crew to Warner.
Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group has found a place to park. After meeting with various labels, the Miami rapper has signed a deal to bring his roster of talent to Warner Bros. Records. "Its official!!!!!! @maybachmusicgrp has partnered with Warner Bros!!!!!!!!!!!s/o Lyor Cohen..Tod..Joey I.e..dallas..and mybrother GucciPucci," tweeted the Bawse in the early hours of Saturday. "Deal of the CENTURY!!!!!!!!!!!!! #MMG #WB." While details have yet to be announced, the deal is expected to include distribution, marketing, and promotion for artists Ross signs to his imprint.
