West Coast rap newcomer Kendrick Lamar recently delved into reaching new heights since dropping his gold-selling good kid, m.A.A.d city solo album and the worst part behind his newfound success.
Despite turning into a household name, Lamar said his biggest fear is getting accustomed to the glitz and glamour.
"They watch the smallest things, from the YouTube video with 500 hits to the number-one single and gold album. The worst part of success is, to me, adapting to it," Lamar said in an interview. "It's scary. Andre 3000 said, "I hated all the attention, so I ran from it." I think about that. The last six months, I've been going crazy, thinking, "Is it supposed to be like this?" Because when the cameras are on and the people are watching, that can make a person want to shut down from everything and everybody." (GQ)
He also named a few hip-hop heavyweights he views as inspiration and close competition.
"Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem, Rakim, Kurupt...," Lamar added when asked what artists he would love to go toe-to-toe with. "I'm on their toes, for sure. I remember when I was a young buck listening to them, I was thirteen or fourteen going back to the albums and how crazy they were. They just have a little more experience than me. I wouldn't get in the studio with them and be nervous, I'll put it to you that way. I wouldn't be nervous." (GQ)
This week, Kendrick spoke on his new LP pushing out over 500,000 after only a couple months on store shelves.
"It's crazy man, you think about the first time you actually start rapping," Kendrick told MTV News of good Kid, m.A.A.d city's success moments before he took the stage at Cali Christmas in Los Angeles. "That's what I think about every time I hear that, knowing how far I've got with it to actually have your own album in your hands and it's certified gold. It's a crazy feeling; it's a surreal moment in time that I'm in right now." (MTV)
Recently, Maybach Music Group's Meek Mill named Lamar's album one of his 2012 favorites.
"My favorite album of 2012? Ohhh. I don't know. Let me think. I got a favorite album I would say. I would say the best album beside mine is Kendrick, 2 Chainz. What else is my favorite albums? What else is fire that I'd be listening to? I just don't want to say the politically answer. I want to say who we're really listening to. We be listening to [Chief Keef's 'Love Sosa']. Yo Gotti, Lil Reese and sh*t." (Rap-Up)
