News: George Zimmerman's Blood-Dripping, Swollen Face Pic Emerges
Tuesday, Dec 4, 2012 4:24PM
Florida resident George Zimmerman's defense team hopes a new photo of their client's face moments after his fatal altercation with slain teenager Travyon Martin last winter can kill a murder charge.
The graphic image surfaced online this week, months after the shooting took place.
Lawyers for George Zimmerman believe that a newly released color photo of injuries their client sustained during his fatal altercation with Trayvon Martin and an alleged conversation involving Martin's father create doubts about the strength of the murder case against the former neighborhood watch captain. The color photo, which was released months ago in black-and-white form, shows Zimmerman's swollen and bruised nose with blood dripping down his mouth. The image was released on the Zimmerman defense website, gzlegalcase.com. His attorneys released the image publicly Monday, along with a separate motion asking Sanford police investigator William Irwin to take another deposition because of comments he made that came to their attention after his first deposition. A statement from the defendant's legal team surfaced shortly after the image became public.
"This is a photo of George Zimmerman taken by a police officer on the night of February 26, 2012. A black and white photocopy of this image was provided by the State in the first Discovery. This high-resolution digital file was finally provided to the defense on October 29, 2012. This image was disclosed in the State's 9th Supplemental Discovery. In accordance with the updates to our media policy that we published on November 13, we will be making all public documents related to the case available on our website, including the rest of the State's 9th Supplemental Discovery as soon as we are sure it has been properly redacted according the the Court's stipulations on protecting information regarding specific witnesses." Zimmerman's attorney has already expressed his issues with the color photo not coming out sooner.
The attorney for George Zimmerman said he is "frustrated" that prosecutors withheld a color photo of the Florida gunman that could bolster his case that Zimmerman was being beaten when he shot Trayvon Martin. "I get frustrated when certain evidence gets out and other evidence is withheld," said Mark O'Mara, attorney for Zimmerman, 29, who faces murder charges in the Feb. 26 death of Martin, 17. "The photo is not a game-changer, but it is significant. (Fox News)
Despite the new evidence, his attorneys will have to wait until next summer for the trial to begin.
Zimmerman's trial is scheduled for next June; he is facing second-degree murder charges in Trayvon Martin's death. Zimmerman claimed that on neighborhood patrol that night and he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Trayvon Martin. The state of Florida has a "Stand Your Ground" law and this case tests that law. (Examiner)
