After getting crowned SOHH Underrated by Naughty By Nature's Treach in the past, rap veteran Freddie Foxxx a.k.a. Bumpy Knuckles gives SOHH his reaction to the accolade.
Honored by the notion, Foxxx dished out his own admiration for Treach.
"Yo, Treach has always been somebody who I looked up to in retrospect," Freddie told SOHH when asked for his reaction to getting crowned SOHH Underrated. "He's a good friend of mine, that's number one and he gave me an opportunity in '93 to do the 19 Naughty III record and I've always loved him for that. Treach's opinion of me is always well-received because I know whatever he says, he says it with the best intentions and I know if that's the case, a lot of people have said I'm underrated." (SOHH)
He also acknowledged how difficult it is to gain recognition in an ever-growing and ever-changing music industry.
"I look at it like this, I don't feel, personally, I'm ratable. I don't think I'm ratable because who's rating when you got so many people in this world that hasn't heard [your music], you're rated by the standards of what? Are we rating each other by corporate American or are we rating oursevles by something else? In hip-hop, there's so many great emcees, it's an honor to be considered anything in this business. I salute Treach for that and I accept. It's all love." (SOHH)
Last winter, Treach gave Fred the title based off his longevity and tough-guy raps.
"For SOHH Underrated, I would have to say Freddie Foxxx a.k.a. Bumpy Knuckles from New York. There's certain artists that you hear throughout your time and from their voice, delivery and along with the lyrics you can feel it. Bumpy scares a lot of people into not even listening to him. He's kind of like a [comedian] Paul Mooney on tracks. You might not want to sit too close to him because he might get on your a**. He would call you out on your bullsh*t. Bumpy's more of the type that if you're talking about this, this and the third, he's not doing it just for the sake of rhyming. He's talking some real sh*t. There's some artists that come out and you're like, "You know what? He makes me feel every word." (SOHH Underrated)
Earlier this year, Bumpy hit up SOHH and broke down his Nas-featured "Turn Up the Mics" anthem.
"Nas to me is one of the best lyricist to ever to rhyme in the current day. This track just kinda happened on the humble. We was ridin' and I was like, "Let's go to the crib and do a joint together." So I played the beat ... it was a different beat. What you hearin' is Nas from like '05 or '06. So it was a different time for him, so those lyrics may not be something he would spit right now, but he said what he said with such conviction, that's my joint. Nas came up with the chorus. Nas is like my lil' brother, man. That's my dude. Nas used to hang out in the studio back in the day when we used to be workin' with Eric B.. He used to be around Eric B. and Rakim and he was a youngster in the studio with us." (SOHH Singled Out)
