Just over a week after Chicago rapper Lil JoJo lost his life to gun violence, a physical brawl popped off at his funeral yesterday (September 14) and required police involvement.
Details of what went down surfaced online late Friday evening.
Chicago police on Friday cleared out a funeral home during services for a slain teen rapper after hundreds of mourners rushed toward the casket and nearly knocked it to the floor. The mother and sister of Lil Jojo -- whose real name is Joseph Coleman -- were led out of the viewing area hysterical, as other family members took to the microphone, yelling at other mourners to "Get the [expletive] out!" (NBC Chicago)
There are reports of alleged gang-related people being present at the funeral.
Chicago police swarmed the area, with about a dozen unmarked police cars circling the Jones Funeral Home, at West 79th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, and a police helicopter buzzing above. Gang presence appeared to be heavy at the funeral home, with many mourners exchanging gang handshakes. (NBC Chicago)
A Lil JoJo family member took an upbeat approach to the brief violence.
For John Coleman, the parking lot dance party -- and even the crush of people who nearly toppled Lil JoJo's casket -- was a testament to how much his half-brother was loved in Englewood. "Today's a rough today for me. We grew up together. I'm not feeling right. I'm feeling crazy right now. But s--- you see all the people supporting him. He was loved," John Coleman said. "Everyone wanted to see him. That didn't make me mad. It makes me feel good. He was respected. He was known and appreciated." (Chicago Sun-Times)
Last weekend, the rapper's perceived music rival Chief Keef gave his condolences to losing a fellow Chicago-bred up-and-coming talent.
"I appreciate music, so I'm going to focus on that and sign off of Twitter I won't have anything to say until my album drop 11/27 #R.I.Pjojo," Chief Keef tweeted September 8th.
"i got a LOTTA sh*t 2 say but this aint da place...my music is. i love chicago & i wanna make this sh*t big for us! tell our story. #300"
"since i was put in a messed up spot i think that i finna sign off this twitter sh*t for awhile or at least til my album drops on 11/27"
