New York rapper Talib Kweli has weighed in on Young Money star Nicki Minaj vowing to vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in this fall's election.
Kweli said the rapper likely wanted her "Mercy" remix Dedication 4 verse to spark widespread reactions and attention.
"Just heard a dude on Hot97 say he won't let his daughter listen to Nicki Minaj cuz she endorses Romney. Really? That's what it took? lol," he tweeted September 4th.
"I doubt Nicki seriously supports Romney. Her lyrics ain't political. She just wants y'all to talk about her & she winning cuz it's working!"
"RT @showtimesays: its no different than Nas sayin "Kidnap the presidents wife without a plan" (wait Nas wants to kidnap Michelle?! What?!)" (Talib Kweli's Twitter)
On her new record, Minaj raises eyebrows by appearing to co-sign the Republican presidential candidate.
"I got more money , in in my f*cking purse /Court side, you in the C Section," she raps, "I'm with them bloods you you with the C Section /In Malibu I'm bout a sea section /And all these b*tches is my sons, yeah C-Section /I'm a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/You lazy b*tches is f*cking up the economy /Out in Miami I be chilling with a zombie /Diablo Alejandro de Mello Gandhi" ("Mercy" Remix)
Since the track dropped, various media outlets have scrambled to decipher her true political stance.
Gawker, tongue-in-cheek, tried to fact-check her. New York magazine noted that Minaj has previously tweeted that President Obama's health care plan should have gone further. Vanity Fair tweeted that so far "Internet (and presumably Mitt Romney) Confused" about what Minaj might be up to. Politico, which reported the Minaj "endorsement" late Monday, today rounded up the "best tweets" from other politicos reacting to the news. The best one had to be from The Wall Street Journal's Lyneka Little. "[I]n the same rap, Minaj also mentions hanging out with zombies, so it's hard to say exactly what it all means," she points out. Earlier this year, Nicki took a few shots at the government.
Her political views are uncertain. She took to twitter when "Moesha" actress Yvette Wilson died of cervical cancer and posted this "What's sad is that when Yvette was bringing home the bacon, the gov't was probably taking millions. On her deathbed though, #Nowheretobefound,"she wrote. "That should be a God given right! Even with Obama Care, too much involved. Just give FREE health care to all. @BarackObama what can we do?"
