Young Money rap star Nicki Minaj recently weighed in on the success surrounding 2 Chainz and why the artist formerly known as "Tity Boi" is destined for more.
Although it took him nearly a decade to reach his mainstream success, Minaj said she thinks everyone has their time to shine and the light is finally on Chainz.
"When God says it's time, it's time. He sat around for a very long time, and it's like, you can't tell him nothing, and you can't stop what God ordained, and I'm really, really excited for him," she said. "I love when people get a second chance, and he's the true meaning of capitalizing on a second chance and making it work and winning. ... I loved for one of his first mainstream looks to be on my album, because he deserves it. He worked hard, more importantly he wasn't cocky then, he's not cocky now -- he's a stand-up dude. He came on my tour, on time every single day, gentleman, true, true class act." (MTV)
Young Money boss Lil Wayne recently delved into his close-knit bond with the fellow Southern rapper.
"I don't know if the A-Town know but that's my friend. [laughs] That's not my rap buddy, that's my real friend," Wayne told DJ Drama in an interview, referring to 2 Chainz. "I knew that guy when he didn't know how to make no words rhyme. You know what I mean? [laughs] That's my real friend, I know him. He's 'Tity Boi Put It In The Air' to me. ... And all of a sudden this guy is killing it. He's murdered the show. ... It's weird to me, I'm sorry, it's weird. He always gives me the upmost respect. He always gives me so many props." (Hot 107.9)
Earlier this year, G-Unit's 50 Cent reflected on the buzz surrounding him.
"[Potentially hot artists?] Definitely 2 Chainz 'cause he's been around. He's one of them guys that's finally having a moment. I remember when he was in Playaz Circle. I know it's been years and years of work. And the kid Future. He's got some hits under his belt that ain't under his name, like that 'Racks' joint. I watch. It may seem like I'm doing business in different areas and doing different things, but my passion for music hasn't changed." (Shade 45)
Chainz recently talked about grinding out his long-awaited Based On A T.R.U. Story solo debut.
"I'm looking at it like I worked my a** off," he said in an interview with DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God. "It's not about the record. I'm not even in tune with what the charts are doing. When it first happens I get geeked and then I go back to work. I just know I've done, just this year alone, I've done two tours with two people I feel like are major artists with diverse fan bases -- I'm just looking at what I did on my own prior to doing tours. Just going around kissing babies, shaking hands, and just really trying to figure out the connection with the fans. So will I be disappointed if I only do one-something? No, but at the same time I just got high expectations for myself." ("The Breakfast Club")
