Incarcerated Florida resident George Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, was arrested Tuesday (June 12) on a perjury charge in relation to his $150,000 April bail bond.
According to reports, Mrs. Zimmerman was taken in by authorities Tuesday afternoon.
Shellie Zimmerman, wife of George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin, was arrested Tuesday on one count of perjury, the Seminole County, Fla., Sheriff's Department said. Deputies arrested Shellie Zimmerman, 25, about 3:30 p.m. ET, after they were advised by the office of State Attorney Angela Corey that a warrant had been issued. His $150,000 bond was revoked after allegations that during an April 20 bail hearing he and Shellie Zimmeran misled the court about their finances, neglecting to disclose they had raised at least $135,000 in a PayPal account.The order issued Tuesday by Assistant State Attorney John Guy charged Shellie Zimmerman with knowingly making false statements during the April hearing. The 25 year-old's time in police custody did not last long courtesy of a $1,000 bond.
The wife of the Trayvon Martin's shooter was charged with perjury Tuesday, accused of lying when she told a judge that the couple had limited funds during a hearing that resulted in her husband being released on $150,000 bond.Shellie Zimmerman, 25, was released on $1,000 bond. George Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the teen's slaying and had been out on the bond after the April hearing. However, Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester on June 4 revoked the bond and ordered Zimmerman returned to the Seminole County Jail. George Zimmerman is slated to have a bail bond request hearing later this month.
George Zimmerman, who faces second-degree murder charges in the death of Trayvon Martin, will get a new bond hearing on June 29. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old black teenager February in what he said was self-defense, had his bond revoked last week and was returned to jail. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester will preside over the bond hearing in Sanford, Fla., the court said in a statement today. Zimmerman, 28, returned to jail Sunday because his $150,000 bond was revoked after prosecutors claimed he and his wife, Shellie, deceived the court during an April bond hearing. (USA Today)
Zimmerman had his bond revoked in early June and received a 48 hour deadline to turn himself in.
George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin, surrendered to police Sunday and was booked into jail after having his bail revoked two days earlier. Zimmerman's legal team said in a tweet that he was in police custody. Zimmerman's bail was revoked because the judge said he and his wife lied to the court about their finances so he could obtain a lower bond. On Sunday afternoon, about 40 minutes before the 2:30 p.m. deadline to surrender, Zimmerman was listed as an inmate on the jail website. He was listed as being held without bail and having $500 in his jail account. (NPR)
