[SOHH highlights a hot record each week and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After West Coast rapper Mann wakes up with "4 A.M.," Pyro and Ryu of Sound M.O.B. share their story behind the production of the Kirko Bangz track "Drank in My Cup" and its remix featuring 2 Chainz and Juelz Santana.]
Pryo: Things are great right now: Going from dreaming about this stuff to it becoming a reality ... surreal is the only way I can describe it.
Ryu: We connected with Kirko through a mutual friend that he knew who brought him to the studio one day. We heard him spit and really thought he was talented, so from there we just started working together -- this was around early 2009 when we were barely startin' out. When we made "Drank in my Cup," it was kinda crazy because we were really under pressure to come up with a single... we locked ourselves in the studio for like a whole week tryna come up with something. From the get go, I had a good feelin' about the song, but even after we sent the record off, Pyro and Kirko actually didn't believe that this would be the single ... they were kinda skeptical, but when the label heard it, they automatically knew that this was gonna be the next record. Once they saw the response it got from the local Houston area, we knew that the record would be huge.
Pyro: I'm lovin' the remix as well, honestly. The 2 Chainz verse grew on me. When I first heard it, I was kinda wishy-washy about it. But it definitely grew on me. But as a whole, I really like how it came together. If I had one request though, I would just have wanted to keep J. Cole on that mix 'cause I just like what he did on it.
Ryu: Juelz did his thing on the record. I like how they added an East Coast feel to it. It's gonna add a buzz to the song in New York as well. Juelz wrecked his verse so I actually applaud them for doing that.
Pyro: The success of this song has opened up doors that were harder to be opened at first. That's simply put. Off of this record, we can just mention this and people right off the bat are able to identify with us musically, where at first, people would make you jump through hoops just to be heard.
Ryu: Right now we've got the attention of more artists, so we're just tryna guide our career in the right direction and work with the right people that are gonna help us succeed.
