[SOHH highlights a hot record each week and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After Cy Fyre analyzed his new "I'm On 2.0" anthem, West Coast rapper Mann wakes up with "4 A.M."]
This is one of the craziest records I've ever done and we shot one of the most amazing music videos out in the desert. It's so wonderful. I couldn't wait to release it to the people and we kept it a secret for such a long time.
I had been out in London for so long and dubstep was one of the biggest influences out there. So when I got back, I knew I wanted to make a record with that sound. I'm in my 20's, I'm young and I'm having fun and that's what I wanted to do.
I'm getting money, living the life and I feel like this is one of those records with that kind of feel. I told Fingas, that's the producer, this is how I wanted to do it. "4 A.M." is just a perfect title because it's just about being up late, wilding out at 4 A.M.
When I shot the video, I just figured it would be something virally we'd do so we made it out of pocket. The video is done at a car junkyard where we're just busting windows and smashing stuff. It's kind of just out there and I can't wait for the world to see this side of me.
Besides being the rare West Coast rapper signed to the East Coast-centric Def Jam, Mann was only 18 years old when he was signed to the label. The L.A. native studied acting and dance in high school and joined a number of local hip-hop crews before attempting a solo career. In 2008 he signed with the A2Z Entertainment agency and a year later he signed with Def Jam. In 2010 the label issued his singles "Text" with Jason Derülo and "Buzzin'" with 50 Cent.
