[SOHH highlights a hot record each week and offers a unique look at the track in Singled Out. After producer E-Train broked down his Keith Murray-assisted "Talk Sh*t" anthem, rapper/beatmaker Kovas decodes his new "The Stick Up."]
The situation was pretty crazy. I was working with a good friend of mine named Kojak out in Hollywood and he's produced a lot of records. I was actually out there working out there, helping co-produce tracks he was doing with a few different pop artists.
He told me, "Yo, I think my homie Andy is going to come through." I had no idea who he was talking about. Then Andy Milonakis came through and we were just going over beats and he started freestyling. It was like a late night 2 a.m. session just vibing out and talking about some New York sh*t.
I was like, "Yo, we should just get on a record or something, just to f*ck around." He was down with it and I think a lot of people see him on the show but don't know he can actualy spit. It's just one of those things where I wanted to hear what he was saying with a context.
I knew I was going to put something together and a couple days later, I started thinking about what track I would make for it. He thought it was crazy. It all really started from there [and] we recorded that sh*t out in Hollywood.
There's actually footage of me and Andy Milonakis recording in a hotel room. He wrote his stuff on the spot. He literally did the record, his verse, in ten minutes. Then I recorded it on my laptop and that was it.
The reaction has been crazy and it's all a part of my mixtape album called The Come-Up which comes out in May. It's going to be hot.
Kovas made his debut in 2000 at the age of 16 as both a producer and artist on the Tommy Boy Records release, De La Soul featuring Kovas "Words and Verbs." He began to compose music, pulling from his Latin/ French Moroccan heritage, as well as rock, punk, soul and hip-hop influences. In 2007, Kovas released his first solo EP, The Arrogance of Youth. In 2009, he released a follow up EP Reagan Babies.
