While 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' debut may be his biggest selling album to date, the G-Unit head recently said he had to re-listen to the entire 2003 LP before last month's South by Southwest performance.
Speaking with television personality Rachael Ray, Fif admitted he downloaded the entire album for practice.
"To be honest, Get Rich or Die Tryin'," 50 told television host Rachael Ray when asked what new music he has recently downloaded. "[laughs] I had to download it because I had to listen to the music again before the [South by Southwest] performance. From front to back, I had to perform the entire record, from front to back. There's pieces, I felt like I knew it but I had to make sure I knew it. Listening ten years later like, 'I think I got it.' [laughs]" ("Rachael Ray Show")
Last month, 50 received some help courtesy of rap star Eminem and singer Governor during his Get Rich or Die Tryin' set.
While Dr. Dre didn't show in Austin, Eminem -- the focus of rumors all week -- joined 50 on "Patiently Waiting'' and a short encore that almost didn't come off because of lackluster crowd reaction, a commonplace occurrence at SXSW. "I guess it's not what have I done, but what have I done for you lately, is that right?'' a tweaked 50 Cent said when he returned to the stage. But perhaps showing he's mellowed in the decade since he filled the air with the "pop pop pop'' of songs like "In Da Club'' and "Many Men (Wish Death),'' he did the encore anyway. Dre wasn't the only prominent player missing from the session. Governor replaced the late Nate Dogg, who passed away a year ago this week, on "21 Questions.'' (Boston)
Prior to the event, G-Unit's DJ Whoo Kid talked to SOHH about the hype surrounding the showcase.
"Yeah, I'm going to be there with 50 performing the whole Get Rich or Die Tryin'. So I'm the deejay, I got hired again," Whoo Kid told SOHH when asked if he would be at the annual South By Southwest event this week. "I gotta deejay the whole, whole album. The whole Get Rick or Die Tryin' album. [How crazy is this?] It's f*cking nuts, man. It's gonna be amazing. I'm just amped over those records that I've always wanted him to perform, now he's gonna perform them. He's gonna do the whole thing so it's going to be a good look. I can't wait." (SOHH)
Not alone for the showcase, Shady Records artists like Slaughterhouse were also billed to perform.
Shady 2.0 has officially announced the lineup for their SXSW concert. This year Shady fans are in for the show of a lifetime. 50 Cent will headline the event with a performance of his entire Get Rich or Die Tryin' album. Taking place on Friday night (Mar. 16), Sway will host the evening of hardcore hip-hop. Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse are also on the bill. Big K.R.I.T., School Boy Q, Action Bronson, Don Trip and more are also scheduled to perform. (VIBE)
