Underrated: "20 Years In The Game & He's Still As Nice As Every N*gga Now"

[Each week, SOHH asks two entertainment personalities to name who they feel is the most underrated emcee in hip-hop. After Sha Stimuli gave Masta Ace the title earlier this week, West Coast rapper Glasses Malone crowns E-40 SOHH Underrated.]

E-40 (SOHH Underrated)

E-40 is at the top of my list. 20 years. 20 years in the game and he's still as nice as every n*gga now. We always say that. I've always been f*cking with E-40.

That motherf*cking E-40, he's so tough. I'm talking about right now. I know it's hard to just get into his style but when you hear that motherf*cker rip? That n*gga be on. That n*gga's spitting game and he's so slick with it.

Like I said, he's a grown a** man and even his son is getting down in the music industry. He's probably better than his son at rapping. His son is dope.

E's crazy. He's crazy and so is Busta Rhymes. I think Busta gets more props than 40 but still though, 40 is crazy. 40 is lyrically sound, he's always current.

I remember the first time I heard him when I was f*cking eight years-old back in '89. I'm like, "This dude's tough!" 40 is that n*gga. I can't even begin to say how underrated 40 is. He's just that real.

He's tough at rapping, he's dropping independent albums, doing real numbers, he gets a lot of money. Every show he does out here in Los Angeles is sold out and this is 20 years later. You can go anywhere on the coast and he's selling out shows.

He can tear down shows every night. He's hungry for it. He goes out every night and rips it. That motherf*cker's been in this game for 20-plus years.

Despite the fact he doesn't glorify the gangbanging lifestyle he once led, rejecting the common archetype of hardcore West Coast rappers, Watts/L.A. native Glasses Malone's explosive mixtape run placed him far ahead of the crop of "New West" MCs who emerged in the mid- to late 2000s. Malone actually grew up between the Watts and Compton neighborhoods in Los Angeles. His whole family was very deep in the illegal drug trade (his mother was convicted and sentenced to prison for 25 years). He eventually abandoned hustling drugs and gangbanging to fully pursue a music career.
