The mother of late rap mogul Tupac Shakur is reportedly down for an upcoming musical based on his music, having approved the Broadway project to continue its production.
According to reports, Afeni Shakur is fully behind the Pac-themed musical.
A new Broadway musical about Tupac Shakur just overcame one MASSIVE roadblock -- TMZ has learned, producers have obtained the approval of the rapper's notoriously protective mother ... who LOVES the show. A rep for the Shakur family tells TMZ, producers personally gave Afeni Shakur a rough preview of "Holler If You Hear Me" -- the new musical by black theater legend Kenny Leon, based on Tupac's music. According to the rep, Kenny wanted Afeni's approval before proceeding with the show -- and he GOT IT ... we're told Afeni was "ecstatic" and can't wait for the show to premiere. The musical isn't about Tupac personally -- it's a fictional story about two childhood friends in a Midwestern industrial city and their extended families. (TMZ)
The project's three-time Tony-winning director, Kenny Leon, recently talked about the overall production.
"The idea was always to make a musical inspired by his music and not to do an autobiographical approach to his life or anything like that," he said, "because I always thought that Tupac was a prophet and I thought if everybody could hear his words and hear his stories, they would see what I see." Casting for the musical is reportedly set to kick-off Sunday (March 4).
Tupac Shakur's music is headed to Broadway in the upcoming musical Holler If Ya Hear Me. PlayBill.com has announced that casting for Tupac's musical is set to begin on March 4 in New York, so interested thespians have just two days to prepare. Anyone going out for a spot in the show had better have some flow as casting directors are seeking Black rappers between the ages of 18 and 35. They're also seeking White actors between the ages of 20 and 25 who can play the guitar. It would be good if they could also rap. (Sister 2 Sister Magazine)
Last month, Hollywood actress Golden Brooks told SOHH how much she loves the late hip-hop mogul's music.
"I go all the way back to 2Pac," Brooks told SOHH when asked who she loves to listen to. "With 2Pac, I was really drawn toward his stories and he had so many things he talked about in his music. I go back to 2Pac, all the way back when he was with Digital Underground. I really love the political messages that 2Pac had in his music. I'm such a Pac fan." (SOHH)
A scheduled premiere date for "Holler If You Hear Me" has not yet been announced.
