After blessing hip-hop heads with the latest follow-up since last summer's "Nasty," rap veteran Nas opens up on the his new buzz-generating single, "The Don", featured on his upcoming Life Is Good LP.
According to Nas, the instant he heard the beat for his upcoming track, he was certain of of its star power.
Nas is gearing up to release his 10th studio album, Life Is Good, this summer, and the Queens MC gave fans a first taste of the anticipated LP last week with the premiere of his new single, "The Don." "When Salaam [Remi] played me the beat for it, I said, 'That's the single -- do this and do that and we're golden.' So he started flipping it around," Nas said of the first time he heard the instrumentals. "When we heard that Heavy D died, of course we were messed up, and Salaam called me and told me, 'You know your record "The Don"? You know who gave me that, right?' He's like, 'Heavy D gave me that. He liked what we did with the other single, "Nasty," and he sent me this record.' And the rest is history. So rest in peace, Heavy D." (MTV)
The new record premiered online less than seven days ago.
Nas comes back with a vengeance on "The Don," the heavy-hitting single off his upcoming 10th album. Produced by Salaam Remi, Da Internz, and the late Heavy D ("Heavy D gave this beat to Salaam for me to rap to"), the reggae-flavored tune features Nasty Nas in top form, touting tough bars over a rasta hook. Welcome back "The Don." (Rap-Up)
Earlier that same day, Nas teased fans by releasing the single's new cover art.
Taking hiatuses are somewhat of a forte for Nas. After stepping back into the mindset of that hungry young rapper from the Queensbridge Projects and returning with "Nasty" in June of last year (with the video arriving later in October), God's Son seemingly set up shop and took off once again, averting his focus on writing raps for K'Naan, Rick Ross and Chris Brown (the latter we have yet to look forward to). Unveiling the cover art for his new single "The Don" today, however, indicates at a much more welcoming turn (or U-turn, depending on how you look at it). If the pinky piece is anything to go by, this forthcoming track looks to accompany "Nasty" in heavyweight company as the potential second single from the record. (Soul Culture UK)
In February, the Queens Bridge native broke the news of his album's long-awaited completion.
"Ayo Jung! Ya Bday comin!! We goin in. 5 days NONSTOP!!! Plus we celebrating my LP being WRAPPED!!!!!!," he tweeted February 23rd. (Nas' Twitter)
