Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West is making headlines this week with reports claiming he has placed a ban on fashion critics from his clothing collection at Paris Fashion Week.
Details on his ban began circulating online Thursday (March 8) afternoon.
Kanye West reportedly banned all fashion critics from the preview of his second collection of DW Kanye West women's clothing in Paris. The rapper's previous line was widely panned by critics when it debuted on Paris catwalks last season, which apparently left the rapper-turned-designer feeling defensive. Regardless of the ban, critics were kinder to West's designs this time around, though some took him to task for his use of fur and for borrowing perhaps too much inspiration from Givenchy. Rolling Stone's Colleen Nika approved, noting that the new designs were a "marked improvement" and praising his improved tailoring. (Rolling Stone)
Critics have also spoken out on the ban, citing Yeezy for his unexpected decision.
The rapper-turned-women's clothing and accessories designer was reportedly so worried that the style press would bash his second collection, he banned them from the preview. "He canceled last minute, saying, 'I don't know about this. I got treated unfairly by the press last time. Why would I want to do this?'" New York Times fashion writer Eric Wilson reported Tuesday. Before West booted Wilson from his showroom, the critic said a preview would be a great chance for the budding designer to personally explain his vision. West just said, "No, if they don't understand it, they don't understand it." (New York Daily News)
This week, reality star Kim Kardashian raved about the rapper's clothing line.
"I just love what he designs," she gushed to us. "Look at me, I'm dressed head to toe in his stuff." She was not wrong. She even wore his famous Giuseppe Zanotti shoes which cost nearly $6000!!! Does she feel people are unfairly harsh to him about his fashion line? Kim stood by Mr K: "In my view he's a creative genius, I think he creates beautiful clothes that women want to wear". Few might agree with this analysis, but if the route to a woman's heart is via her wardrobe, we think that Kanye and Kim are meant to be. (My Daily UK)
The rap star is currently in France showcasing his self-titled clothing line.
Ms. Kardashian was sitting in the front row at Mr. West's late-night showing at Paris Fashion Week, along with Alicia Keys, Sean Combs, Common and Azealia Banks, so maybe that gives some idea of the target customer he has in mind for a collection that seemed desperately trying to project both an aura of coolness and easy availability. Not that Mr. West was saying. (New York Times)
